Breezy, accessible fashion has been the Cacharel trademark since 1962. Founded in Nimes by designer Jean Bousquet and named for a bird found in his native Camargue, the line first achieved recognition for its Liberty-print shirts. Prior to launching Cacharel, Bousquet worked at a men's tailoring shop, and as a designer and cutter. Based on his experience in these roles, he recognized the need women had for a shirt that was as versatile and easy to wear as a man's. The Cacharel shirt went on to become a bestseller, and established the company's reputation for youthful styles. In 2000, the London-based husband-and-wife design team Clements Ribeiro were hired as head designers, and under their influence, the line has taken on a naïf, bohemian sensibility.
