She has become an American fashion institution and credits her feminine instincts for the huge success of the company she launched in 1984. After studying at Parson's School of Design, Karan's trademark creations - which aim to wrap and sculpt the body - were an instant hit and she has been recognized an impressive seven times by the CFDA, including a lifetime achievement award in 2004.
