It’s hard to believe that it was only last year that Lana Del Rey crept into our collective consciousness with her haunting track “Video Games”. She polarized critics who either loved her Nancy Sinatra look and lounge-lizard sound, or hated the idea that she was a manufactured pop princess. One of the 20th-century’s greatest artists, New York painter Edward Hopper is celebrated this fall in a major retrospective in Paris, a city in which he spent some time as a young man. The exhibition at the Grand Palais showcases Hopper’s unique ability to make the mundane poetic with his lush rural landscapes and his famed urban diner, hotel and street vignettes.
