Kate's friend, the makeup artist Charlotte Tilbury, first worked with her in the '90s. "I [was] mesmerised by her beauty, style and professionalism," she says. "She is the great beauty of our time and her face is a makeup artist's dream: her incredible cheekbones, her almond-shaped eyes... her versatility doesn't cease to surprise me."

   For years we knew nothing of the real Kate. Her ex-boyfriend Johnny Depp told her to "never complain, never explain" and it served her well. But when Kate became a brand in her own right, slowly she let us in. She even gave US Vogue the exclusive on her 2011 wedding to the Kills' Jamie Hince. But we've only scratched the surface.
