- In our new regular style masterclass, we show you how to wear the runway’s hottest pieces. This week, The Edit’s KIM HERSOV works spring’s new shape
From diaphanous dresses at Theyskens’ Theory to Stella McCartney’s sporty jackets, the cocoon silhouette has emerged as one of the season’s biggest style stories. First imagined by Cristobal Balenciaga in 1957, the iconic couture cut – sloping shoulders that billow out into an oval “cocoon” structure – may look intimidating, but it’s utterly feminine and figure-flattering when styled correctly. “The key is to balance proportions, offsetting exaggerated volume with streamlined separates,” says Hersov. The right accessories are also vital. “Keep it simple: bags, shoes and jewelry should echo the modern, minimalist lines of this hero piece.”
Smart and timeless, Marni’s exquisitely cut cocoon jacket is a versatile option. Though worn with an equally voluminous skirt on the runway, it’s office-ready when teamed with slim-fit tailoring.
less is more
Let the jacket be the focal point. A simple statement cuff and a refined tote are the ideal accents.
Keep your proportions in check. Contrast the oversized shape with narrow pants and sleek pointed pumps.
