    When Cecilia Alemani moved to New York as a curatorial studies graduate student in 2003, she found a city replete with mysteries. There was a street-naming system that defied promises of navigational ease – at least in her neighborhood, the Lower East Side, where the streets are called Hester and Ludlow, rather than 23rd and 77th. “I kept getting lost in the same three or four blocks,” she says.
