    Virgin Gorda, British
    Virgin Islands

Treat this as a day trip from any other Virgin Island – sail from your hotel and snorkel from boat to beach. Expect to take lots of photographs as the scenery is incredible, with the crystal-clear water and volcanic boulders on the sand creating a Jurassic spa environment. Check beforehand and avoid the area when a cruise–ship is docked, as it will be overrun. Stay at the Rosewood Little Dix Bay (rosewoodhotels.com), a five-star resort with its own fantastic beach.

    What to wear there

    José Ignacio,

It’s not how you swim, it’s how you look before you do it in this tiny fishing village. This is arguably the most fashionable beach town in South America, from its modernist waterfront villas to its hidden restaurants. Relax around the sunken fire pit and cantilevered pool at the architectural Playa Vik (playavik.com). Parador La Huella (paradorlahuella.com) is the heart of the beach scene – a rustic-looking restaurant on the sand where model-type waiters police the best tables. For even more exclusivity, ask about its ‘secret’ beach club, La Caracola (paradorlacaracola.com), accessed by boat and invitation only.

The Baths’ picture-perfect vista is not to be missed
