wear from the off. So you can buy and wear right now. Or you can if you live in London – did the God of Pre-Fall invent all this autumnal weather we are having? That's what it feels like. And don't get me started on how there is no such thing as summer any more, because like the person who bangs on about chicken not tasting the way it used to, I may never stop.
Actually, if you are judicious, you can wear Pre-Fall in any clime. Why? Because this is the season that will form your closet's backbone for the rest of summer and for all of next season, too. Thanks to how designers use Pre-Fall to hint at what they will be showing on the FW13 runways, buying into it is the way to demonstrate you are on top of it sartorially, that you have slyly acknowledged the trend, cleverly engaged in the sensibility before everyone else.
Remember, though, this is not about getting ‘shouty’. You want to hone in on the stealth pieces that will lay your fall foundations. The
pieces you can sneak into your closet, and play that ‘Oh, this little thing?' game, whatever the weather. Buy Now, Wear Now and Be Ahead Of The Game. What's not to like about that?
Take the huge trend for winter white on the FW13 runway, as exemplified by Céline, Isabel Marant and Giambattista Valli. I have my beady eye on a polka-dot dress by Rochas in crème fraîche jacquard, which, with a creamy vintage stole, I can see working perfectly either in the chilly environs of an over air-conditioned hotel or an alfresco supper in freezing bloody London. Ditto the trend for floral prints, as mastered by Erdem. Animal prints, too; if you can snag anything in jaguar-print goat hair by Christopher Kane, hats off to you.
“Buy Now, WEAR Now and Be AHEAD Of The Game. What’s not to LIKE about that?”
Gray, that's going to be another big, big thing, but just an acknowledgment that you know will do. Richard Nicoll, Victoria Beckham and Hermès, they went in for it deep. Me, I like the idea of a gray bag, like Saint Laurent's Classic Duffle 6 and its suede and leather tote. Or a shoe, like Gucci's Kesha suede buckle pumps (adorable on tanned legs).
Then, of course, there's the ankle boot, which could not be more important for fall. Try a pair of chunky-heeled, biker-style ones from Gianvito Rossi, which tie into the season's renewed love affair with all things punk.
So anyway, the weather being foul back home, I am writing this from a hotel poolside in Bodrum. There is this white Rag & Bone tuxedo jacket I keep thinking about as I sip on a glass of Raki. And an oversized teal sweater from Stella, which would go with just about everything I own. Oh, hell. I might just go for them now. The idea of it all being there the moment I get home is something I just can't resist.”
