- As she launches her new beauty line, the makeup maestro tells KATE SHAPLAND about working with Kate Moss and why she’d rather go naked than without makeup
It all began with mascara. Charlotte Tilbury is recalling the moment when, at 13 years old, this modest cosmetic changed her life. “It belonged to a friend at boarding school,” she explains. “I put it on, walked downstairs and the other girls said I looked great. It gave me so much confidence. The mascara had turned me into a better version of myself.”
The revelation started Tilbury off on her journey as a makeup artist, collaborating along the way with the world’s most talented stylists, designers, photographers and models, including friend Kate Moss – “A dream face, the perfect structure and balance” – with
whom she has created some of her most iconic looks (she even did Moss’ wedding makeup when the supermodel married the Kills’ Jamie Hince in 2011). And now Tilbury has her own eponymous beauty brand, which is arguably the most comprehensive makeup launch in decades.
“I’m very creative, and I could have gone in lots of directions professionally,” she says. “But after 21 years in the business, beauty is still my first love. It makes me feel better. Beauty gives me a high.”
