Color regularly provides the most identifiable new-season update, but it is often the most polarizing, too. SS14’s pastels are a case in point. A welcome visual refresh to fall’s darker palette, pastels call to mind the first buds of blossom after a gray winter, signaling brighter days to come. But how wearable are they really? Burberry’s Christopher Bailey provided the most succinct answer to that question: his collection of sugared-almond pencil skirts, sheer shirting and lace trench coats left one of the most lasting runway impressions and showed exactly how to wear the trend. DKNY, too, pulled off a key SS14 piece with its lemon coat (below left) – a sunshine statement maker already gracing A-list shoulders.
