    Meet three females designing
    wardrobe-defining pieces at their own
cult labels. You won’t look back...

    NICK WAKEMAN

    of Studio Nicholson

Nick Wakeman, 40, founded her minimalist womenswear label,
based on masculine silhouettes, in 2010 after 20 years in menswear.
I started out… Studying textiles at Chelsea College of Arts, and began
a love affair with fabrics. Studio Nicholson is actually my second
brand (Birdie was my first), but this time I’ve learnt from my mistakes!
My motto is… Keep things simple. Ultimately, I’m trying to make it
easier for women to get dressed in
    the morning.

    The Studio Nicholson woman is
    A bit of a tomboy with a
nonchalant vibe – she’s 38, fabric-conscious, loves Céline and reads
    The Gentlewoman magazine.
My brand name comes from… My
    great-grandmother, who was a
nurse during WWI – her surname
    was Nicholson. She was very
    striking and strong.
    My current inspiration is… Japan.
I love the integrity of Japanese design; they place an importance
on fabric and are honest about
    what they do.
