Summer is arguably the season where the notion of an essential garment rings true. It is, after all, when we want to enjoy alfresco moments as much as possible and when AM plans seamlessly ebb into spontaneous PM dinners – so the last thing you want to think about is having to head home again for a change of outfits. What is necessary, then, is a wardrobe that can take you from dawn to dusk with the utmost ease; clothes that can feel both smart and casual and are endlessly appropriate, no matter where your day might take you.

This is why cotton is the failsafe fabric of the season. This lightweight cloth is low-key yet refined and looks just as good slightly crumpled as it does freshly pressed – perfect for bringing an effortless mood into your everyday look. From Mara Hoffman’s balloon-legged shorts to Loretta Caponi’s bohemian blouse, these are pieces to wear on repeat.

Of course, no summer wardrobe would be complete without a white dress – an enduring day-to-night hero that mixes girlish femininity with 1970s ranch chic. For fashion assistant Annie Hertikova, a crisp dress is the one key item she’s sure to buy each season, because of its wardrobe mileage and easy, throw-on-and-go flair. Which is exactly why she was sure to snap up LoveShackFancy’s broderie anglaise cotton number as soon as it launched on-site. “It will be my summer go-to,” she says. “It’s ideal in my bag for the beach, as I can wear it at the end of the day when I head into town for dinner – plus, the midi length makes it appropriate for when I’m in the city as well as on vacation,” she says. “I’ll be styling mine with a basket bag and some lace-up leather sandals for an effortless summer look.”

For an urban feel, pair with a delicately woven leather tote from Dragon Diffusion, which adds a city-like sensibility to this more whimsical dress, while JW Anderson’s oversized chain-strap slides are a fresh alternative to the classic gladiator flat. Switch them up for the evening with a kitten-heel mule and gold-tone jewelry. A painterly silk scarf, meanwhile, will add an air of both polish and ‘prairie’ – providing a quintessential summer mood if ever there was one.
