Much has been made of the sartorial movements that defined 2020, from the surge in popularity of loungewear and sweatpants to Zoom-approved styling tricks (like dressing from the waist up). However, after a year during which comfort and a decidedly pared-back aesthetic reigned supreme, there has been another seismic sartorial shift. For SS21, designers across the board championed a more optimistic outlook, experimenting with everything from riotous colors to structural silhouettes and exaggerated proportions. All of which is to say that, after a year of being reduced to mere functionality, fashion has once again become a means of self-expression.

For fashion assistant Annie Hertikova, it’s the transcendent power of clothing that she’s excited to tap back into – starting with manifesting summer, despite the dreary London weather so far refusing to play ball.

“For me, Matteau provides the ultimate vacation capsule – and, incidentally, I can’t stop fantasizing about my first post-pandemic holiday right now. Although May has so far been quite chilly in London, what I want from my closet is escapism in the form of pieces that transport me to white-sand beaches and balmy nights spent sipping cocktails. Of course, these uplifting designs still have to work in the context of the city, which is what makes this two-piece the perfect addition to any wardrobe. Worn with sneakers or modern mules, and styled separately with blue jeans and chunky knitwear, it promises maximum style milage.”

If you’re keen to add a sense of wanderlust to your existing closet, playful accessories are the perfect place to start. Loewe’s shell-shaped basket bag is sure to make you dream about far-flung adventures, while molten-gold jewels by the likes of Loren Stewart and cult London label Completedworks will complement sun-kissed skin (no one need know whether you’ve been laying out or simply perfected your self-tan routine). Finally, every warm-weather look should be finished with a pair of stylish sunglasses. And Givenchy’s tortoiseshell frames make a fail-safe addition to any outfit.
