A curated roundup of the best new fashion arrivals, hand-picked by our editors
Even for the most ardent fan of summer, there comes a point towards the end of the season – when the temperature begins to drop and the evenings become shorter – when the allure of fall becomes so strong that you almost will it into being. Of course, this appeal is in no small part down to the desire for a sartorial switch-up. Packing away lightweight dresses and sandals in favor of cozy sweaters and winter boots comes with a special kind of thrill.
If summer is a time for experimenting with bold colors and prints, then fall is synonymous with timeless pieces cast in warm hues and welcoming textures. This season, take inspiration from the world around you. The copper tone of Max Mara’s liquid-silk slip skirt and Fleur du Mal’s soft-cup satin bra, cast in a rich chocolate shade, are subtle nods to the season’s falling leaves. Offset the sensual nature of these pieces by pairing them with roughly hewn knits or crisp cotton in the form of Valentino’s faultless poplin shirt.
New-season accessories are another fail-safe way to instantly elevate your look. Equestrian-inspired boots are the only style to be seen in for FW21, and whether you plan on wearing them with sweater dresses, blue jeans or utility pants, they don’t come much more luxurious than Co’s butter-soft black leather designs. Elsewhere, LA-based jeweler Sophie Buhai has bult up a cult following thanks to her amorphous designs. Her dark jade and gold hoop earrings will add edge and flair to any outfit they’re paired with, while Jacques Marie Mage’s exaggerated cat-eye sunglasses are as playful as they are elegant.
Ultimately, though, it goes without saying that the hardest-working piece in any great winter closet is, of course, a trophy coat. Exquisite outerwear can elevate your entire wardrobe, and, as it will act as the finishing touch to virtually every outfit, it’s imperative you find the right one. For acting senior fashion features editor Megan Logue, Acne Studios’ leather-trimmed coat hits the sweet spot between practical yet polished, making it a new-season must-have.
“I’ve been on the lookout for the perfect coat to add to my arsenal this season – ideally one that makes a statement but also boasts endless style milage – and this chic Acne Studios design does just that. The leather detailing and textured finish elevate this streamlined coat to new heights. I’ll be layering mine over blue jeans and luxe sweat sets for off-duty days, but I think this coat will really come into its own as part of my nine-to-five look. I plan on styling it with oversized tailoring, crisp shirts and a supersized tote for a fresh and effortless take on back-to-the-office dressing.”
