Rock’n’roll meets romance at Chloé SS18

Camilla Deterre never planned to be a model. Despite being approached by talent scouts regularly as a teen, the now 27-year-old was determined to be a photographer, and started her career assisting the likes of Mario Sorrenti and Annie Leibovitz. When she finally decided to step out from behind the camera and give modeling a try, Deterre was an instant hit, of course, working with cool young labels like Maryam Nassir Zadeh and Eckhaus Latta in her hometown of New York. She hasn’t given her heart completely to modeling, though (“I don’t want to give up myself for what they want to turn me into,” she says), and has designed a restaurant on the side and started work on a homeware collection. Already an established Chloé girl, Deterre’s offbeat style chimes neatly with the label’s carefree spirit, making her a perfect choice for the exclusive launch of the SS18 collection on NET-A-PORTER.

Its unveiling on the runway back in September was eagerly anticipated and much discussed thanks to the woman behind the collection; it was the debut of newly installed Creative Director Natacha Ramsay-Levi. A relative unknown outside the industry, she has serious fashion pedigree thanks to the 11 years that she spent at Balenciaga before heading to Louis Vuitton as Nicolas Ghesquière’s head of womenswear. Bringing a rock’n’roll edge to the bohemian, carefree spirit that Chloé is renowned for, Ramsay-Levi has added biker jackets and cowboy boots (fast shaping up to be the big-hitting accessory of the season) to the signature dreamy dresses, embroidered blouses and retro pantsuits.

It’s the individualist attitude of the new collection that makes you want to wear it and make it your own – just like Camilla Deterre

It’s a collection that you’ll really want to see up close, due to the compelling details peppered throughout: the mystical mix of symbolic hands, moons and eyes; the silver rings that pierce ruffled dresses and sculptural tops; and the colorful prints designed by artist Rithika Merchant. Above all, though, it’s the individualist attitude of the collection that really makes you want to wear it and make it your own – just like Deterre.
