The Natural Look
Channel understated luxury and quiet sophistication with Vince’s landscape-inspired collection
When Vince’s creative director Caroline Belhumeur watched James Crump’s documentary, Troublemakers: The Story of Land Art, it really struck a chord. Charting the work of a group of New York artists in the ’50s and ’60s who created huge earthworks across the United States, its muted tones and vast, desert backdrops sparked her imagination, and she set about channeling them into the California-based label’s SS19 collection.
Ever since it was founded in 2002, Vince has been a go-to for those in the know looking for the kind of elevated takes on wardrobe staples that your day-to-day wardrobes rotate around; sophisticated separates and hardworking tailoring ripe for endless layering. Since she took up her role, Belhumeur has set about infusing those basics with a fashion flair, ensuring they hit the sweet spot between where-anywhere practicality and of-the-moment desirability. And this season that means landscape-inspired dusty hues and soft textures that chime perfectly with the label’s signature streamlined take on understated luxury.
What really makes the clothes work is the laid-back LA vibe that runs through even the most polished pieces. Take this season’s silky separates, the minimal slips and irresistibly effortless midi skirts that neatly touch upon fashion’s current ’90s obsession; add a pair of ‘barely there’ sandals and tousled hair and you have the perfect after-dark look, but layer with soft knits and ankle boots and they’re easy and understated enough to work in daylight hours. Or the throw-on-and-go dresses, from the knitted turtleneck to the twisted satin shift, that will ensure that getting dressed in the morning – and looking good when you walk out the door – requires minimum thought.
The label has a knack for masculine infused tailoring, too, offering up relaxed shirts, fluid pants and neatly cut suits that you’ll want to wear on repeat. They’re balanced out with the low-key femininity of its blouses, long-sleeved, high-necked and quietly glamorous, just the thing to give your tailoring an extra lift. And, when the temperatures drop, you’ll want to wrap your look up in one of the label’s standout pieces of outerwear, whether you opt for a long and lean classic trench or the tactile faux-fur jacket. Just the thing to see you through your working day, weekends off duty, and everything in between.
