Shine Bright like a Diamond
Isabel Marant gives her rock’n’roll bohemia a Studio 54 spin for SS19
Canvas opinion among fashion’s most savvy on which fashion house’s ‘woman’ they would most like to be, and Isabel Marant’s name would come up again and again. The luxury Paris label is aspirational not just because of the clothes it offers up – although the killer combination of skinny pants, relaxed sweaters and high-impact mini dresses is pretty irresistible – but because of the air of undisputed cool that goes with them. Ever since she founded her eponymous label in 1994, Isabel Marant has deftly combined the insouciant polish of Paris with the laid-back ease of LA. Combined with the perfectly tousled hair and tanned long limbs of her model line-up, it creates a kind of fashion magic. It’s won over a global ‘who’s who’ list of stylish women such as Sienna Miller, Gwyneth Paltrow and Margot Robbie, as well as a whole stable of models including Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Amber Valletta and Lily Aldridge.

”
The key to Isabel Marant’s appeal is a canny mix of modern bohemia and rock’n’roll – and SS19’s offering is no exception. This time, though, it comes with an injection of 1970s disco courtesy of New York nightclub Studio 54 and the legendary faces that frequented it, from Lauren Hutton to Donna Summer. That means high-shine aplenty, from metallic foil shorts and puff-sleeved tops to shimmering dresses ripe for catching the light from the disco ball. Velvet dresses with crystal details up the drama, too. This being Marant, though, they’re tempered with a good dose of denim – acid wash or patchworked high-waisted jeans, slouchy paper-bag-waist shorts and throw-on-and-go jackets in line with the throwback feel. And there are plenty of free-spirited details to see you through the summer months, with printed flippy dresses and one-shoulder tops – all the better for showing off your tan – complete with a smattering of embroidery and studs.
Marant can always be relied on to offer up footwear that feels perfectly of the moment. She’s been championing the ’90s-inspired naked shoe trend and SS19’s iteration comes with a smattering of crystals on the straps. Lastly, Marant’s latest riff on the cowboy boot – suede calf-length styles that are ripe for pairing with all those shorts and teeny dresses – are sure to make an impact.
