The Buzziest Face Treatments To Know Now
From the A-list’s go-to for a flawless glow to lasers with less downtime, clinically proven approaches for great skin are back in demand. Here, MALENA HARBERS talks to DR. ANNE MENDELOVICI about the treatments that reign supreme – and which ones to book this year
In an era of fast-launch esthetics and viral skin trends, it’s easy to get caught up in the hype. But according to Dr. Mendelovici, one of the most trusted cosmetic doctors in the field (and a beauty-editor favorite for her subtle, natural approach to skin ageing), some of the most effective ways to maintain great skin are with treatments that have been used, studied and refined for years. While innovation still matters, the tried-and-tested options are enjoying a major revival – they’re often the safest and consistently deliver results. “There is no miracle treatment,” says Dr. Mendelovici. “But there are ways to enhance lifting, sculpting and skin quality if you know what to prioritize.”
Why skin quality is everything
If there’s one marker of ageing that gives the game away, it’s skin texture. Dullness, fine lines, crepiness and loss of elasticity can add far more years to your face than volume loss alone. “What you want to do is maintain the quality of your skin for as long as possible,” says Dr. Mendelovici. “But skin texture is the most complicated thing to change.” These are the treatments that do it best…
For texture concerns
PRP
When it comes to improving skin texture safely and effectively, PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) remains one of the most reliable tools in esthetic medicine. The treatment uses your own concentrated blood plasma (which is rich in growth factors) to boost collagen and elastin production. It can be injected or applied topically following microneedling to reduce fine lines, improve pigmentation and texture and even treat scars. “PRP is a medical-based treatment,” says Dr. Mendelovici. “We use it in hospitals to accelerate healing and tissue regeneration for injuries. It’s safe, and while results in skincare are subtle, they are real.” Unlike newer regenerative treatments, PRP has years of clinical use behind it. The results you see are gradual because collagen production is a slow biological process. “PRP won’t change your skin overnight,” she explains. “But it will help maintain its quality over time.”
Looking ahead, Dr. Mendelovici notes that MCT (Meta Cell Technology), a medical system that improves PRP by extracting exosomes from your own blood (and the first to do so), could potentially take the skin treatment to another level. “Exosomes work to enhance skin quality at a cellular level, but currently only plant-based or synthetic options are allowed for use in the UK and are typically applied topically after microneedling, since injectable forms are not permitted,” she says. While promising, she notes that PRP remains the most established regenerative option until more long-term data is available.
Microneedling
A favourite treatment of Gwenyth Paltrow, Jennifer Aniston, Victoria Beckham and Kim Kardashian, microneedling is often the go-to for a flawless, red-carpet glow. It works by creating controlled micro-injuries in the skin that trigger its natural healing response. The result? Increased collagen, a smoother texture, more even skin tone and improved elasticity. “For prevention, microneedling with PRP is excellent,” notes Dr. Mendelovici. “However, if someone already has a lot of lines, microneedling with PRP can be too soft. You need to choose the treatment according to how advanced your signs of ageing are.”
Fractional CO₂ Laser
When visible lines and texture issues are more pronounced, look to fractional CO₂ laser treatments for more powerful results (not to be confused with fully ablative CO2 lasers which were once the gold standard anti-ageing treatment of the ’90s and are now reserved for surgical settings only due to the downtime). “If you want results, you sometimes need to be a little more aggressive,” says Dr. Mendelovici.
Fractional CO2 lasers – such as Fraxel re:pair – work by resurfacing portions of the epidermis only, stimulating collagen renewal while smoothing fine lines. They typically target around 20% of the skin, delivering results with less downtime than their full-on counterpart and are particularly effective for delicate areas, such as around the eyes. “You’ll need about five sessions to arrive at CO2-level results but it’s worth it as you have much less downtime.”
For skin tightening
Ultrasound
Texture is only part of the story when it comes to tackling the condition of your skin. As skin ages, its structural support weakens too. “I like to work on skin’s appearance in different layers,” explains Dr. Mendelovici. “First texture, then structure and after that, volume.” To help tighten and lift skin, ultrasound-based technologies play a key role. “If you want lift, you have to work on the muscle,” she says. Think Ultherapy, HIFU, Sofwave, and Ultraformer – they deliver focused energy beneath the skin to tighten the muscle layers from below, creating visible lift on the surface.
For volume
Profhilo Structura
After 50, volume loss becomes unavoidable and it’s often what makes your face look tired rather than simply lined. “As we age, our faces lose fat and structure,” says Dr. Mendelovici. “The fat pads drop and we become more hollow in the cheeks.”
Profhilo Structura is a type of hyaluronic acid filler that targets and restores fat rather than simply filling wrinkles. Injected deeper than traditional fillers (into the superficial layer of fat below the surface of the skin), it spreads evenly to rebuild skin support without puffiness. “This is not for someone in their 30s or 40s,” she says. “It’s for those over 50 as it’s about restoring what you’ve lost, not changing your face. I typically don’t like to restore lost volume with filler because the face can look puffy,” she explains. “This restores the facial fat we all lose creating a natural-looking lift without any artificial volume.” Treatment typically involves one session, followed by another four weeks later.
