The chic sleep: Paradiso Art Hotel, Ibiza
With its retro decor and emphasis on art, this striking hotel is drawing a stylish crowd on the White Isle. By OLIVE WAKEFIELD
Not since Wes Anderson’s The Grand Budapest Hotel has an all-pink pad made such waves. This new Balearic bolthole has won over the Ibiza boho crowd, who are usually more accustomed to the island’s barefoot beach resorts and hippie hangouts. Understated the Paradiso is not; the interiors are one big throwback to the candy-hued glory days of ’70s Miami. You’ll find pastel-pink beach loungers placed around the pool, strips of neon lighting flashing through the foyer and bold Pop Art hanging in every room. Design details such as Eames chairs and Ettore Sottsass-style wavy headboards pay tribute to the building’s retro heritage, and will appeal to aesthetes looking for the next visual-feast stay. The hotel is positioning itself as an art mecca with workshops for local artists, some of whom are even taking up residency in the glass-walled bedroom in the lobby (where guests can look on). If you’re not feeling creative, there’s a weekly roller disco to throw shapes at, and plenty of poolside cocktails and delicious ceviche to occupy your other senses as you while away the days.
THE DETAILS
Relax
Every Tuesday, the pool area is transformed into an outdoor cinema for the hotel’s Cinerama evenings. Guests are encouraged to stretch out under the stars while movie classics like American Graffiti and Risky Business roll on the big screen. Gin and tonics and popcorn are provided.
Dine
For some of the island’s best sunset views, head to Café del Mar, a true Ibiza institution and the place for nibbles and cocktails. Order the famous shrimp rolls and an Ibiza Lemonade – spiked with vodka, limoncello and Prosecco – while you listen to ambient chill-out tunes as the sun dips.
Must-do
Paradiso is perfectly placed near the white-sand beaches of San Antonio Bay – an area brimming with artisanal markets offering local trinkets, ceramics and fabrics alongside delicious traditional street food. Make sure to bring a bit of the island home with you.
