Shop modern lady with a fashion editor

The PORTER fashion editors each have their own personal style. Some love bold and bright colors; others prefer to keep their palette on the dark side. Then there are those who indulge in graphic prints and others who pick florals time and time again. Each week, get to know the team’s tastes and style tips as they reveal what’s on their wish list this season and how they’ll be wearing their favorite pieces. Here, PORTER’s Executive Fashion Editor EMILY ZAK, who takes ladylike to the fashion front line, divulges her most-wanted pieces of the season and why…

STYLE RÉSUME

My personal style in three words… Unfussy, modern, polished.

My style muses are… Ali MacGraw, Jackie Onassis, Nan Kempner and Marianne Faithfull.

My repeat buy item is… A tailored jacket. It’s the most transformative piece in a woman’s wardrobe.

The item I can’t live without is… A wide-legged trouser or palazzo pant, preferably high-waisted to create the illusion of longer legs.

My favorite piece in my closet is… My Nicolas Ghesquière-era Balenciaga jacket with peplum and epaulettes.

My secret style tip is… Wearing one color creates a longer line.

If I could only wear one designer it would be… Prada.

You will never catch me wearing… A shift dress.

My wish list

“My signature style is best described as polished with a modern edge. Far from fussy or prim, tailoring gives me a kind of fortification. It creates a better shape, and is good in almost any situation, which makes it a kind of fail-safe; the power of a power suit.”

  • Gucci
    Jordaan horsebit-detailed leather loafers
    $730.00
It’s about balance, or mixing rough with smooth. I prefer a tailored jacket with denim or with deconstructed elements. A peplum reworks proportions and makes your waist look smaller.
I love a matching ensemble, but more for the purism of the continuous line. I opt for strong primary shades, worn as color blocking, or all one color.
  • Illesteva
    Leonard round-frame acetate sunglasses
    $180.00
I don’t think I am necessarily classic, but I don’t buy clothes I can’t see myself wearing for at least five years, and I don’t buy clothes for one occasion. I’d rather spend more on elements that will work across all areas of my life.
