HERITAGE CHECKS

L-R: Maria Bernad, Adut Akech, Alexandra Carl

The FW19 runways were awash with tweedy checks, meaning you’ll want to stock up on capes and sturdy wool suits come fall; for now, the easiest win is a checked blazer. Keep it simple and layer yours over a T-shirt and jeans or utility pants, or get more adventurous and mix it with contrasting checks and tartans.

POWER WOMAN, POWER SHOULDERS

L-R: Irina Linovich, Christine Centenera, Julie Pelipas

Start adding pantsuits to your wish list – everything from the classic to the cleverly reimagined will make the cut, but bear in mind that the pieces are less important than the silhouette. To really make an impact, you need a padded, outsized and all-round statement-making shoulder. Take notes from Stella McCartney, who offered up a silky pink dress with such strong shoulders that it tipped over from purely feminine to seriously fierce.

TWISTED ROMANCE

L-R: Caroline Daur, show-goer at Paris Fashion Week, Sofia Sanchez de Betak

FW19 is shaping up to be the season of ‘pretty but not’ – florals and ruffles that at first glance are worthy of a princess, until you notice the toughened-up pieces they’re worn with or the unexpected fabric they’re conjured from. Until you can get your hands on the runway looks, try layering sheer pastel pieces over black, or reaching for punk-feeling florals set against a black background, and pairing them with zip-heavy biker jackets and clompy boots. Start stocking up on chokers and lashings of silver hoops, too.

  • Alexander Wang
    Martingale belted leather jacket
    $2,100.00
  • Simone Rocha
Embellished ruffled tulle and satin midi dress
    $2,395.00

THE COLORIST

L-R: Jeanette Friis Madsen, Chloé Harrouche, Georgia Tal

Thought you’d be wearing nothing but neutrals come fall? Designers across the board offered up a rainbow of colorful clothes destined to brighten up your closet through the winter months. The best were unexpected pairings of contrasting shades that are ever so slightly off-kilter. These are colors that work best in classic, sophisticated shapes layered together, so look for tailored separates and pared-back shirts and blouses.

BROWN, BISCUIT AND BLACK

L-R: Ming Xi, Nicole Atieno, Chloé Harrouche

As you’ve no doubt noticed, this season beige is ruling supreme, and its influence is going to stretch into FW19. The new way to wear it, though, is to mix it up with multiple shades of brown and throw in some black for good measure. Contrasting textures will add interest, so look for skirts and jackets in chocolate-box shades.
