Of all the major fashion cities, London is by far the biggest rulebreaker in terms of style. Alongside quintessential heritage details and Savile Row tailoring sits experimental, off-beat design and an irreverent spirit that makes dressing in the capital a lot of fun. Less fun, however, is the rain that is forecast for the next few weeks. The threat of a downpour at any moment means that practical outerwear is a must – but that doesn’t mean it can’t be chic. Thanks to heritage brands such as Burberry, we never have to compromise on style to stay dry.

“A closing highlight of London Fashion Week, the Burberry show is always a celebration of the best of British, exquisite design and craftsmanship – and no piece better embodies the brand than the trench. The perfect transitional piece, the trusty trench is the chicest and easiest way to stand out in style in the London rain,” says NET-A-PORTER’s content director, Alice Casely-Hayford. “I adore the forest-green shade and elegant silhouette of this style, which elevate my show uniform of denim, loose tailoring and loafers. Pile on lots of gold jewelry and ring stacks and finish off with an oversized tote for fashion-week essentials,” she adds.

London girls can’t resist a characterful knit. Whether worn the traditional way or tied nonchalantly over the shoulders (one of style doyenne Alexa Chung’s go-to tricks), it’s an easy way to add interest to an outfit without ever feeling too polished. JW Anderson x Pringle’s sweater is knitted with a floral pattern from the heritage label’s archive and comes in bold primary colors that are guaranteed to brighten drizzly days. Pair it with Agolde’s ‘Ren Long’ jeans and Christen’s sleek ‘Classic Square’ loafers in merlot leather, which feel like a modern take on ’60s mod styles – and are all the cooler for it.
