Denim is fashion’s greatest closet foundation – reliable, hard-wearing and endlessly adaptable. But, for 2026, denim rises to become the most intentional piece in a look, with sculptural, expressive silhouettes and styles. “It’s the elevation of denim from utility to fashion,” says Vanessa Hong, a New York-based fashion entrepreneur. “Centering denim as luxury really opens up so many possibilities.”

The shift is visible from runways to real wardrobes. Moving on from the recent focus on puddling hems and voluminous styles, 2026 leans more into personality. Proportions are carefully carved, and color – whether earthy or saturated – carries meaning.

Designers are embracing that same idea. At Ossou, co-creative director Nina Khosla describes a denim mood that lives in the tension between heritage and experimentation. “At the heart of [our collection] is an obsession with the tradition of denim, balanced by the unexpected and modern.” Across silhouettes and washes, one thing is clear: denim in 2026 isn’t passive, it’s directional.

Jeans in earthy-brown hues are the new favorites everyone’s wearing right now

Brown denim

If blue jeans are the foundation, brown denim is the revelation. From chocolate to carob, the hue has emerged as 2026’s most versatile alternative neutral. “I love browns as a way to create a new neutral palette,” says Khosla. “Used monochromatically, brown denim feels raw and fresh. Less expected than camel, with a bit of edge.” At Citizens of Humanity, creative director Marianne McDonald echoes the sentiment: “Brown has become a key color in our collection this season for its richness.” The brand’s barrel-leg ‘Miro’ jean in leopard print offers a sculptural update that transitions effortlessly from day to night. “I love styling them with warm, tonal pieces in creams and caramels. Layering with a knit and a shearling jacket instantly elevates an everyday city look.”

New York-based content creator Linh Niller says she styles her brown jeans with other rich tones – burgundy, evergreen or head-to-toe brown, broken up with texture. “Mix knits, leather and different accessories to keep it interesting.”

Drainpipe jeans

While volume continues to dominate, spring 2026 also makes space for precision. Enter the drainpipe jean: slim, elongated and clean-lined – a study in restraint. Positioned between skinny and straight-leg styles, drainpipe jeans are subtly wider than skinnies but more refined than traditional straight cuts, offering a clean, tailored silhouette with a distinctly elongating effect.

In a season defined by bold shapes, the drainpipe offers contrast, working best when styled with equally intentional pieces. Think crisp shirting, tailored outerwear and footwear that sharpens the line of the leg. The result is sleek and architectural – a reminder that denim’s power lies not just in exaggeration, but in refinement.

Indigo washes

Deep, inky and saturated, indigo denim signals a return to polish. The darkest expression of blue denim, indigo is inseparable from the fabric’s origins. This was the shade used in the very first pair of jeans, created in the late 19th century, setting the foundation for every style that followed. More than a heritage reference, its midnight depth instantly sharpens denim’s traditionally workwear roots, transforming it into something far more elevated.

This season’s indigo feels deliberate and commanding. “Indigo is an obsession. It automatically makes you feel so sleek and put together,” says Hong, citing a Khaite pair as a standout and championing a dark-indigo take on double denim (AKA the ‘Canadian tuxedo’). “I love a denim-on-denim look. A full indigo look would be so sick!” Alternatively, Niller leans into a preppy-cool styling approach: striped rugby polos, loafers, trenches, oval sunglasses and a pop of color – a bright red scarf – to break up the depth of the blue.

Barrel-leg jeans

The barrel-leg jean continues its ascent as one of denim’s most compelling shapes. Defined by a narrow waist, rounded leg and gentle taper, the silhouette offers volume that flatters. “I love a barrel leg because it’s universally flattering,” says Hong, whose favorite pair comes from Nili Lotan. Niller agrees, noting that “a slight taper makes all the difference,” especially when proportions are thoughtfully considered. Petite at 5ft 2in tall, Niller prioritizes where the waist hits and how the leg shape visually elongates the body.

“After super-skinny styles gave way to volume, barrel-leg jeans offer a modern sculptural quality,” describes Khosla. Her advice? Balance is key. “If you’re new to barrel denim, it’s easiest to wear them with something closer to the body – but either way, it’s important to wear them with a little attitude.”

Styling-wise, Niller leans into contrast: chunky knits layered over T-shirts, oversized leather jackets, and a color range spanning white, black, dark blue and light blue. For stylist and editor Indya Brown, whose denim collection is now “half-barrel jeans”, the appeal lies in their off-kilter shape. “They jut out at the hips and feel less conventional,” she says. “You can get some really extreme [styles] where the shape is super exaggerated – it’s interesting.”

Already favored by fashion editors, barrel-leg jeans are set to become the defining silhouette of 2026
