The Street-Style Trends That Defined Fashion Month
From statement coats to purple reign and delicate vintage-inspired lace, these are the street-style trends that defined fashion month
The texture: suede
Sure, corduroy is making a comeback this season but, never underestimate the power of suede. That was the lesson from tastemakers this fashion month who showcased just how effective it can be when it comes to curating a look that feels equal parts on trend and effortlessly chic. Actor Ella Beatty attended the Balenciaga show in a pair of tobacco-colored suede pants, which she styled with a crisp white button-down and point-toe pumps – a simple formula that always delivers. Echo her look with Stouls’ ‘Lilou’ pair from our edit, styling yours with everything from cashmere sweaters to logo tees. Model Rosie Huntington-Whiteley took a similar approach, teaming Saint Laurent’s funnel-neck jacket with tailored black pants but went one step further by adding a suede bag into the mix, too – the bright terracotta hue of her Bottega Veneta ‘Barbara’ tote creates beautiful texture and contrast. If you want to make even more of a statement, reach for Tom Ford’s tomato-red suede jacket from the fall/winter runway, teaming it with the matching skirt or indigo denim.

The piece: a statement coat
From animal-print to fringed leather, statement coats were a recurring theme on the streets of New York, London, Milan and Paris. The beauty of this trend is that it does all the heavy lifting, meaning you can keep the rest of your look relatively simple and it will still feel like a true fashion moment. Jeanne Damas cemented the theory by wearing an oversized red coat as a dress in Paris, styling hers with little more than monochrome slingbacks, a sleek clutch and her signature red lip. Prints are often a shortcut to high-impact style, as proven by Tamu McPherson, who wore a statement leopard-print coat and matching skirt to the Sacai show which she dialed up even more with a pair of mint-green pumps. Follow her lead with Proenza Schouler’s ‘Leticia’ coat in snake-effect leather or mix up your prints with Dries Van Noten’s checked duchess-satin trench.

The update: lingerie dressing
Lingerie for day was a hit last season, and is set to be just as big for fall/winter. But, if you’re wondering how to wear delicate lace-trimmed camisoles and barely-there slips on chillier days, then look no further than chic showgoers, who masterfully styled theirs with knitwear, jackets and tights across fashion month. Take cues from fashion editor Marta Oldrini, by pairing Dôen’s ‘Elowette’ midi skirt with a slouchy cardigan, ankle socks and a kitten heel for the office. Alternatively, layer Chloé’s lilac silk-satin mini dress over jeans or underneath a biker jacket for drinks downtown. Simkhai’s ‘Lea’ dress meanwhile is a stunning choice for dressier occasions paired with a long tailored coat.

The color: purple reign
As for color trends, purple prevailed on the streets in every city this season. From violet knitwear and long-sleeved tees to royal-purple accessories, tastemakers couldn’t get enough. If you’re new to purple and want to ease yourself in before committing to ready to wear, try adding Alaïa’s ‘Le Coeur’ bag to everyday outfits – you’ll be surprised how versatile it can be. As for ready to wear, Loewe’s ribbed long-sleeved tee looks ultra chic paired with brown corduroy pants or a glossy black leather skirt while Willy Chavarria’s sharp-shouldered dress from the runway is a sure-fire way to make a statement, especially when styled with red pumps and a matching clutch.

The accessory: a statement belt
According to the street-style set, the new if-you-know-you-know accessory is one that goes around your waist. A cummerbund – a pleated satin sash traditionally worn as part of a men’s tuxedo or dinner jacket – has become a hit on and off the runways, with iterations appearing in both the fall/winter and new spring/summer ’27 collections. The traditional way to wear it is, of course, with a suit but it looks just as chic cinched over a shirt and pencil skirt and, in some cases, jeans. Valentino Garavani’s ’80s-inspired iteration comes in pink plissé satin that’s perfect for adding a pop of color to muted looks while Le Sundial’s ‘Vesper’ style has more of an Art Deco feel and is a chic way to zhuzh up a simple black dress. Alternatively, reach for a statement belt instead. Khaite’s ‘Keefe’ style is crafted from suede with a molded gold-tone buckle and looks great with high-rise denim.
