PORTER’s eco packaging

PORTER’s environmental campaign to bring awareness to the impact of plastic on our oceans last summer inspired a commitment to reduce plastic use, starting with new eco packaging

Reporter

PORTER is proud to reduce its plastic usage by removing all plastic packaging from our subscriber copies. Wrapped copies of PORTER have been mailed to readers in a fully home-compostable wrap. Here’s what you need to know…

What is a home-compostable wrap?

It is a wrap that degrades and disintegrates in a home compost environment, releasing only oxygen and water as it breaks down. It complies with the European Standard EN 13432.

How do I dispose of the wrap?

Put the wrap in a food waste compost bin that is collected by your council, a well-maintained home compost bin in your garden, or a garden waste bin. Alternatively, you can put the wrap in a normal bin where it will biodegrade over time.

Is the wrap recyclable with plastic?

No, it is not recyclable with plastic, and should not be put into a recycling bin. If a home compost bin is not available, then it should be put into a normal bin and sent to landfill where it will biodegrade.

What is the wrap made from?

Certified Home compostable materials.

Is there any plastic in the wrap?

The bag does not contain any plastic.

Is the material for the wrap certified?

Yes. The material is certified as compostable under both industrial (OK Compost EN 13432) and home conditions (OK Compost Home). It requires the wrap to disintegrate after 12 weeks and completely biodegrade after six months – that means that 90% or more of the wrap will have been converted to CO2. What remains is converted into water and biomass (valuable compost). Under the OK Compost Home certification scheme, it requires at least 90% degradation in 12 months at ambient temperature – your home compost bin. It is NF T51-800 approved.

What does the OK Compost Home logo on the wrap mean?

It is a certification to verify the wrap will disintegrate after 12 weeks and completely compost after six months in a domestic compost bin.
