The Overnight Beauty Products That Really Work
The most covetable beauty treatments are those that do their best work while you do nothing at all. SUZANNE SCOTT shares the overnight success stories that promise amazing results come morning
Upgrade to a mask
If dry skin is a concern, especially during the colder months, consider trading in your usual night cream for a nourishing, more occlusive mask a few nights a week. Cleanse and apply your usual toner and serums, allow your skin to dry a little, then massage in a generous amount of Augustinus Bader’s Face Cream Mask, a super-hydrating formula that will instantly tighten and lift skin, too. Or try Sisley’s Black Rose Cream Mask to wake up with plump skin – just don’t forget to massage the formula into your neck and décolleté, too. Alternatively, apply a few drops of an ultra-hydrating oil, such as La Prairie’s Skin Caviar Nighttime Oil, to seal in all the goodness of your evening skincare ritual.
Protect your lips
Lips have a tendency to lose moisture overnight, and the fine lines around your mouth that are normally undetectable can become more pronounced over time. If yours feel parched when you wake up, try makeup artist Katie Jane Hughes’ technique for soft, pillowy lips: “I apply lots of balm all over my mouth and over my lip line before bed. By morning, it’s plumped up my lips like crazy for the fullest, most juicy pout ever.”
Rebalance the body
The shift into cooler temperatures and the change of season from fall to winter can leach moisture from your skin, leaving your body dehydrated and ashy in appearance. When your limbs feel particularly dry, massage a concoction of body balm and oil in to restore moisture levels. Alternatively, layer oil over a body serum or intensive treatment – we love Dr. Barbara Sturm’s lightweight Super Anti-Aging Body Serum, which replenishes and firms weary skin with active botanical extracts, or Macrene Actives High-Performance Body Cream for a richer, thicker texture. Allow a few minutes for your chosen product to dry before massaging in an intensely moisturizing oil on top, such as Diptyque’s Brilliant Satin Oil for body and hair.
Moisturize your hair
A traditional Ayurvedic method of hydrating and strengthening strands, hair oiling is ideal for all hair types, from fine to tight curls. Place a few drops of hair oil – try Augustinus Bader’s The Hair Oil for a quick-absorbing formula – into the palm of your hand, rub your hands together to disperse the oil, then massage into your roots. And don’t be shy: you want to vigorously massage your scalp so that you stimulate blood flow while spreading the product. If you wear a turban or head scarf to bed, use your fingers like a comb to distribute the oil through your lengths and ends, where it will help to restore moisture lost to chemical treatments and dye. How often you oil your hair really depends on its thickness and how much oil your scalp naturally produces – and always remember to factor in extra time to shampoo it out the morning after.
Elevate the eye area
While a lighter eye cream or serum is beneficial during the day, when it’ll be under makeup, you can afford to dial up the moisture at night. Renowned aesthetician Georgia Louise recommends tapping an overnight moisturizer onto your eye area, smiling to identify where your fine lines appear (usually from the outer corners of your eyes, down onto the tops of your cheekbones), then blending your eye serum or cream into these target zones. Dr. Barbara Sturm’s Exoso-metic Eye Serum is excellent for tackling all the above. For a deeper hydrating treatment, apply La Prairie’s Pure Gold Radiance Eye Cream instead. If dark circles are a particular concern, try MZ Skin’s 5-day Brightening and Hydrating Treatment. The twice daily ampoules flood skin with a mix of peptides, antioxidants and meso-hydrators to visibly boost results in under one week, leaving you bright-eyed and line-light.
