If you’re someone who is averse to anything too bright but still want to incorporate color into your look, then consider earth tones the perfect compromise. With shades ranging from chocolate and burgundy to caramel and the deepest bottle green, it’s a palette understated enough to wear with almost anything yet still refined enough to make a lasting impression.

“Earth tones are the backbone of a capsule wardrobe; they’re the shades that let you buy fewer pieces and get more outfits,” says New York-based fashion editor Coco Schiffer. “Neutrals don’t compete with each other, so everything layers, repeats and combines without effort. When your palette lives in browns, creams, olives, grays and soft blacks, you’re not styling from scratch – you’re rotating formulas that already work,” she adds.

For Schiffer, espresso brown (“the new black; it’s softer, richer and somehow makes everything feel more elevated”), moss (“gives dimension without reading ‘color’”), and oxblood (“neutral-adjacent but adds that little ‘oh, she’s chic’ factor”) are defining her wardrobe for the season ahead – with pieces by Toteme, Khaite and The Frankie Shop firmly at the top of her wish list. Schiffer is also a fan of Nili Lotan’s ‘Emmylou’ jacket, which comes in exquisitely soft burgundy leather. “I love this jacket. I’d probably play into the monochromatic vibe with a similar pencil skirt – or, if I’m feeling fun and funky, I’d go for an off-white or cream pant or skirt and a matching white pillbox hat,” she says.

Also trending right now is olive green, which was spotted all over the spring/summer ’26 runways, including at Saint Laurent. Sitting on the brighter end of the scale, the brand’s cashmere sweater is a great throw-on-and-go option that works especially well with brown or navy tailoring, like Toteme’s impeccable ‘Pauli’ pants. Finish a chic workweek look with Alaïa’s cranberry-hued pumps and Bottega Veneta’s ‘Barbara’ tote in mahogany intrecciato leather – a new style designed by creative director Louise Trotter that is topping every fashion insider’s wish list.

It doesn’t end there: this is a palette you can easily incorporate into your home interiors, too. Take Loewe Perfumes’ ‘Beetroot’ candle, for instance, which is housed in a glazed terracotta earthenware vessel that will add warmth and depth to any living space.
