New York Fashion Week kicks off today with a weekend full of shows that will help shape the season ahead. “In recent years, NYFW has felt much more experimental, with emerging brands coming onto the scene and established brands evolving their approach,” says NET-A-PORTER’s junior market editor Abbi Minchin. “Toteme will be showing there for the first time and Ralph Lauren has taken attendees to the Hamptons for a truly immersive experience.”

Always one of the most hotly anticipated brands on the schedule, Khaite represents the very best of New York style – dynamic design; clean, minimal silhouettes that riff on American sportswear; and a moody color palette inspired by the city’s urban landscape. “NYC-based brands such as Khaite are known for their easy wardrobing pieces and are a great resource for transitional dressing, as we all look to navigate the varied weather that September often brings,” adds Minchin. A chic choice whether you’re sitting on the front row or heading to an intimate dinner, the label’s ‘Heidi’ tank is knitted in a minimal trapeze shape and has a plunging neckline that’s perfect for framing a low-swinging pendant.

Embrace the quiet elegance of Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy’s ’90s style by wearing yours with straight-leg jeans or a flowing cotton-gauze maxi skirt by The Row. To finish, slip on Stuart Weitzman’s mesh ‘Arabella’ ballet flats and a sleek crossbody bag: “I am never quite ready to let go of raffia as summer ends, and Savette’s ‘Tondo’ style is a great way to incorporate the texture into your fall wardrobe,” says Minchin. “Add some sunglasses in the hope it will attract the sunshine, and you are good to go.”

For low-key days, opt for something a touch more casual, like Nili Lotan’s ‘Chesney’ trucker jacket. Made from Japanese denim, it comes in a faded blue wash and has a contrasting corduroy collar. The fitted shape will help balance out more voluminous proportions but size up if you prefer a roomier fit. Then add Proenza Schouler’s ‘Bronco’ boots in biscuity suede for a subtle nod to this season’s Western trend.

Finally, if you only choose one piece of jewelry to round off your look, make it a design by iconic American brand David Webb. Embodying the glamour of Manhattan, these double-hoop clip earrings are crafted from smooth 18-karat gold and platinum set with scintillating diamonds for urbanite polish.
