Oscar de la Renta has long been a powerful player on the red carpet, and the brand’s upcoming collection takes occasion dressing up a notch with glittering gowns worthy of an invitation to any high-profile event. "My designs are known for their beautiful ornamentation, details, fabrics and embroideries," the late designer once said – and for Fall 2024, creative directors Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia have stayed loyal to the eponymous founder’s vision for gilded New York glamour.

Inspired by Art Nouveau architecture, the collection features eveningwear in light-catching metallics, statuesque silhouettes and ornate embellishments that are sure to leave a lasting impression. A key reference on the brand’s mood board was the iconic stained glass famously designed by Tiffany & Co, in 1901, which appears on three gowns using a tesselation of individually dyed acrylic paillettes.

These gowns are imagined in rich metallics, such as ginger, cocoa and gold, however it is really a story about texture and shapes

It is the eveningwear component of the collection that will leave a lasting legacy. Even in pictures, you can see that the craftsmanship is best in class, with the design team introducing several innovative techniques, such as an ombré leather and a woven basketweave crepe. However it is hard to appreciate the couture-like attention to detail without seeing the glittering pailettes and corded crystals up close. These gowns are imagined in rich metallics, such as ginger, cocoa and gold, however it is really a story about texture and shapes. From the ombré column gown that cascades into a cacophony of fringed tinsel to a caged mini dress, crafted from interlaced gold strips moulded to the body, Kim and Garcia have been ambitious in their quest to capture the ornate complexity of Art Nouveau.

After several years of barely-there fabrications, the naked dress trend shows no sign of slowing down at society and celebrity events – and Oscar de la Renta puts an elegant spin on see-through dressing. One gown in our edit, for example, sees a sheer, delicate fabric overlayed with strategically placed silver foliage embellishments. You can just envision it at an Oscars after-party. It is only a matter of time until one of these gowns faces the world’s media on a red carpet. The likes of Taylor Swift, Sarah Jessica Parker and Amy Adams have all selected Oscar de la Renta for significant red-carpet moments, from the Met Gala to the Academy Awards. And there is no doubt that Hollywood stylists will be clambering for their clients to wear the fringed, ombré gown over the coming months.
