How to master the perfect bright lip

A sun-drenched vacation is the ideal time to experiment with a new lip look, but that doesn’t mean you can’t carry on wearing it through into Fall, says GEORGIA DAY

Beauty

Bright lips are a perennial beauty staple, but it’s the summer months when they really come into their own as the perfect complement to glowing, sun-kissed skin. However, don’t stash yours away just yet, as this season they’re set to be big news for Fall, too. In need of some inspiration? Here’s how to create a statement lip that will transition from now and into the coming months…

9 Of The Best Red Lipsticks

Embrace the power of lipstick

Summer is the ideal time to start wearing color on your lips if you don’t already, advises Hourglass’ Global Director of Education, Artistry & Events, Marc Reagan. “Since most makeup looks are pared down for the summer and everything else on the face is simplified, a bright or bold lip color is the easiest and quickest way to infuse life to the face,” he says. It’s also an instant way to feel empowered – just ask anyone who’s ever swept a slick of crimson across their lips right before a boardroom presentation. Even better, “you can use a bright or bold color for to quickly transform a look from day to night for evenings out,” adds Reagan.

Settle on your shade

When it comes to choosing a shade, there is no wrong color; if you’re drawn to it then it’s right for you, just trust your judgement and wear it with confidence. That said, if you’re totally unsure where to start, it’s good to get a general steer on what shades will flatter your skin tone. Anyone with cool undertones in their skin – pink, blue or red hues – tend to suit lip colors with similarly cool tones, such as blue or purple-based reds or plums. Those with warmer undertones – peach, olive or golden – can opt for fiery reds or orange-based shades.

Choose your finish

Although it is a classic, lipstick in a bullet is no longer the only option on offer. Lip stains, tinted oils, pencils and liquid lipsticks have all become increasingly popular thanks to their different finishes. For an on-trend nod to the ’90s, reach for a lip gloss. “Glosses are most definitely on the rise and are really easy for summer days because they don’t require detailed application techniques as so many matte lip formulas do. Usually in the warmer months, people are looking for a more effortless approach to their everyday makeup and lip glosses complete that look beautifully,” says Reagan.

A modern application approach

Application depends entirely on your preference – and patience. For a quick and easy hit of color, apply straight from the tube or bullet. For something with a little more longevity, it’s best to first outline and fill your lips with a matching liner before applying the color using a precision brush to ensure neat edges. For a modern take this summer, heed Reagan’s advice and opt for a pressed-in lip look: “The easiest way to do this is to make sure the lips are moisturized well and then blotted down,” he says. “Take your favorite lip color or an even a brighter one than usual and dot it into the center of the lip, then press in with your finger or a smudge brush. This will melt the color into the natural texture of the lip, leaving behind a hint of color, and it doesn’t require as much precision as a full coverage lip look.”
