Oscar De La Renta’s FW23 Collection Is A Dazzling Ode To Nature
Bucolic inspirations are seen through the luxuriously glamorous lens of the New York design duo behind Oscar de la Renta’s exquisite new-season masterpieces
To wear Oscar de la Renta is to be granted fast-track access to a world of incomparable elegance that’s hard – if not impossible – to resist. Such is the house’s dedication to elevated glamour that the extravagant gowns and neat midi dresses, poised tailoring and opulent accessories, would almost seem at home in a bygone era. Almost. Because co-creative directors Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia, the design duo who trained under the legendary founder and have proved faithful guardians of the maison’s spirit, are masterful at marrying that old-school polish with a fresh and youthful perspective. That’s one of the reasons why their work resonates with the likes of Sydney Sweeney, Kerry Washington, Sarah Jessica Parker, and repeat-wear Oscar de la Renta fan Taylor Swift, who most recently turned to the brand for her The Eras Tour film premiere.
But you don’t need to be in the proximity of a red carpet to enjoy your own Oscar spotlight moment. For fall/winter 2023, Kim and Garcia proffer a collection that is a veritable ode to nature, reinterpreted through an opulent and lively lens, and invested with an uptown sensibility. The duo have created an abundant harvest of vivid florals that burst into bloom this season, featuring intricate prints, lush appliqués and statement accessories (bejeweled blossom earrings are the easiest way to add instant dazzle to any look).
“Sumptuous coats and meticulous tailoring bring a precision and glamour to any occasion. This is old-school elegance for the modern woman
”
With an atelier based in New York, every Oscar de la Renta collection keeps up the pace with fast-moving metropolitan life. This means that, although there are clothes that come into their own after dark (just in time for the party season), there is plenty to discover for everyday wear as well. Note, for instance, this season’s botanical embroidered tweeds. Of course, a black pencil skirt is a sleek proposition for cocktail hour, but it would look just as good with pointed flats and a shirt for an elegant daytime outing. Sumptuous coats and meticulous tailoring bring a precision and glamour to any occasion. This is old-school elegance for the modern woman.
Deftly marrying the dramatic and the demure, a sense of movement is cultivated throughout Oscar de la Renta’s latest collection – via architectural ruffles and shimmering fringing, fluid crepe de chine and sculptural silhouettes. Indeed, luxuriously draped crepe de chine kaftans are a subtle homage to the hostess dresses that Oscar de la Renta himself created for his clients in the 1960s. A saturated palette of lavender, teal and pinks takes its place alongside fail-safe black – rendered romantic as well as chic thanks to ultra-feminine silhouettes and floral lace. Liquid-gold and metallic lamé dresses – some with sweeping, own-the-room capes – are captivating and commanding, bringing a swish of drama to special occasions. These really are clothes for making an entrance.
