Everybody’s wearing check prints
The print we can’t get enough of this season? It’s definitely hip to be square…
From pants and statement coats to handbags and scarves, check was the print to be seen in at New York and London fashion weeks. Maximalists will appreciate the print-clashing potential: take inspiration from fashion stylist Emili Sindlev and wear a check blazer under a wider-check-print coat in a contrasting colorway. Alternatively, adopt a pared-back approach by layering one piece in a bold check over a neutral knit. Leather pants, as worn by fashion editor Flora Macdonald Johnston, will also complement lively prints.
Other attendees to both NYFW and LFW showed their devotion to the trend by mixing check pieces in different colorways, sizes and fabrics. Take your styling cues from tastemaker Gala Gonzalez, who’s taken a light approach: her clean color palette of white and blue gives a singular check piece the limelight it deserves – particularly when teamed with a black or tan tote.
With back-to-back meetings in the diary and a dinner in the evening, classic, versatile pieces such as Balenciaga’s Prince of Wales blazer are key. Pair it with a turtleneck and tailored pants for work, then swap in a silk cami top and layer on cascading fine-chain necklaces for evening. Also, consider Victoria Beckham’s wool check shirt in blue and cream with leather pants, or fully commit by adding the matching midi skirt with button detailing. With Milan Fashion Week kicking off this week and Paris in the pipeline, we’ll be keeping our eyes peeled for elegant check ensembles.
