When It Comes To Denim, Mother Knows Best

Blue jeans are the great sartorial crowd-pleaser; their appeal transcends trends and tastes. Stitched into the seams of every pair are allusions of cool, ease, even a dash of rebellion. The right pair of jeans is your sartorial best friend, but finding your perfect denim match requires discernment (trust us, it’s worth it).

Enter California-born denim brand MOTHER. Founded by industry veterans Lela Becker and Tim Kaeding in 2010, it has gone on to become one of the best-known names in the premium-denim industry. Today, the brand is a favorite among the style set, as well as A-listers (Taylor Swift and Blake Lively) and even royalty (Catherine, Princess of Wales).

It’s not hard to see why discerning dressers love the Californian brand: nailing the balance between comfort and style is key to its design code. Consider the new-season styles, which all have the credentials to become familiar favorites in the most enviable of wardrobes. Featuring high-waisted cuts in vintage-blue washes (some also boast faded detailing for a love-worn charm), the fits are meticulous and timeless. From cropped boyfriend styles to roomy flares and ultra-flattering bootcuts, the super-soft pieces have 24/7 appeal. Try them with everything from white shirts and sneakers to sharp tuxedo jackets and pointed pumps.

As well as drawing on their expertise in matters of fit and wash, Becker and Kaeding tap into the style mythology of the brand’s West Coast roots, with collections taking their lead from ’70s California and the era’s inimitable laid-back cool, rock’n’roll swagger and cheeky playfulness. “We stand for having fun, and not taking yourself too seriously,” is part of their philosophy.

Something the brand does take seriously, however, is its commitment to continually improving upon producing responsibly. Considered design and manufacturing processes play an integral role in everything the label produces. Partnering with local businesses for the production of all its denim styles, 95% of MOTHER’s manufacturing is executed locally in Los Angeles, with 99% of denim products crafted within a 14-mile radius of the design studio. By focusing on local production, the brand’s carbon footprint is less than if it were producing further afield. As the supermodel Carolyn Murphy told PORTER in 2021, around the launch of her upcycled capsule for the brand: “MOTHER is so well-versed on the challenges the fashion industry faces and how we can all do better”.

Indeed, as with most things in life, MOTHER knows best.
