Cartier celebrated the launch of its new Santos watch in San Francisco last night, with a party where tech, food, art and fashion collided in a beautiful evocation of 21st-century innovation. The event was held in a warehouse at Pier 48, overlooked by the city’s baseball park where the Giants kicked off the new season hours earlier, with harbor lights twinkling in the distance. Inside the cavernous party space, guests were treated to an immersive, festival-like display of sound and music created by DJs and bands. Sofia Coppola, who had hosted a lunch for Cartier guests the day before at Inglenook, her father’s Napa Valley winery, danced at the front of the stage to her husband Thomas Mars’ band, Phoenix. Actresses Annabelle Wallis and Mélanie Laurent gossiped with Jake Gyllenhaal, as Sam Taylor-Johnson and her husband Aaron Taylor-Johnson, both of whom had just wrapped filming the adaptation of James Frey’s A Million Little Pieces, hung out with her daughter, Angelica Jopling. Idris Elba – who earlier in the day had talked at the Cartier social lab with set designer Es Devlin about how dreams can influence the creative process – arrived hand in hand with his fiancée, model Sabrina Dhowre. London girls Sienna Miller and best friend Tori Cook hung out with Jeremy Renner, while actresses Freida Pinto, Lily Collins, Chloë Sevigny and Sofia Boutella took to the dance floor. Lisa Bonet stayed close to her husband, Aquaman star Jason Momoa, while Dave Franco and a slickly dressed Larry Jackson, the man who conceived Apple Music, chatted about working on next week’s Coachella festival. British art curator Neville Wakefield admitted to missing his actress girlfriend Minnie Driver, who had stayed at home in LA, while big-wave surfer Laird Hamilton impressed everyone with his dance moves. It was a late night by California standards, but the after party continued in the bar at the Ritz Carlton, which stayed open way past its bedtime for its European guests.
