Mara Hoffman’s sustainable style ethos
A designer synonymous with eco fashion, Mara Hoffman talks about her ethical design philosophy and creating pieces that last
Trailblazing New York designer Mara Hoffman has been re-evaluating society’s relationship with clothing since 2015, and championing a more conscious attitude within her own collections. Firstly, she honed in on sustainable materials, including new fabric technology (from using Hemp for the first time, to materials like Lenzing Modal® and Tencel™ – all made from the pulp of sustainably harvested trees) and whenever using cotton, Hoffman will always aim for GOTS-certified Organic fabric. Even in her swimwear collection, she uses regenerated nylon from post-consumer waste, and polyester fashioned from recycled plastic water bottles. And Hoffman has taken it a step further, making huge efforts in the garment production process in pursuit of her goal to minimize the negative environmental impact of manufacturing, and ensure that all people involved are treated fairly along the way.
This is how Mara Hoffman’s design ethos has given rise to a cult-like following the world over, as an example of high-end luxury taking active measures against the damaging effect of ‘fast fashion’. In an effort to foster more mindful consumption habits, the brand maintains an open conversation about its approach and encourages us to examine our relationship with the clothes we wear. The company continues to focus on sustainable materials, processes and production in order to improve and extend garment life. “A large part of sustainable fashion is creating pieces that resonate beyond a season or two,” says Hoffman. “Our approach started in swimwear, which then progressed into ready-to-wear. It is now the backbone of the brand and the driving force behind our eco mission.”
Hoffman found inspiration for her SS18 collection following a visit to the Kerry James Marshall retrospective at the Met Breuer. She takes us on an adventurous journey of color, texture and print, and proves that being eco-conscious isn’t a compromise in style. From the bold silhouettes of dresses and skirts adorned in multicolored embroidery, to beautifully tailored separates painted in vibrant, floral prints and block colors, each look is an invitation to express your own wondrous sense of style. Whether you’re embracing the prints or simply standing out in bright white, Mara Hoffman’s latest collection is, above all, a celebration of individualism and joy.
