Trending Now: Transitional Checks
Eternally cool and effortlessly chic, checks are back at the top of the street-style agenda. From plaid and tartan to Madras and windowpane, these are the key patterns and pieces to wear now
As the season begins to shift, checks are the perfect style solution to those tricky transitional days when summery florals and tropical prints suddenly feel at odds with the slightly darker weather. Not only are checked prints timeless, they are also extremely versatile and can work in pretty much every setting, adding elegance and ease to work and weekend outfits alike. Plus, there’s a variety of patterns to choose from, all of which can shapeshift from casual to polished, classic to statement-making, depending how they’re styled. Read on for the checks to add to your pre-fall shopping list now…
Western coded
Western-style checks have become so ubiquitous that it’s easy to forget just how chic they are. No longer the preserve of cowboys and country-music stars, the pattern can easily be dressed up for the office or dinner with a few simple styling tweaks. Pairing it with luxe fabrics such as leather, silk and suede will help add an air of sophistication. Take cues from fashion insiders by tucking Matteau’s plaid voile shirt into a column skirt – like Nour Hammour’s ‘Selly’ style in black leather – and finishing with Saint Laurent’s crystal-embellished ‘Jerry’ sandals. Alternatively, wear it over a lace-trimmed slip dress, adding an oversized leather jacket when the weather starts to cool.

Heritage chic
You really can’t go wrong with a heritage checked blazer, especially one as timeless as Chloé’s double-breasted style. Patterned with a quintessential Prince of Wales check, it’s a true wear-forever piece that will transition seamlessly from fall through to spring, adding a hint of country elegance to every look. Give yours a fashion-girl twist by styling it with The Row’s languidly cut ‘Gala’ pants and a sheer blouse – adding Saint Laurent’s razor-sharp ‘Renée’ mules in sheer mesh and Sophie Bille Brahe’s diamond-encrusted ‘Boucle Ensemble’ earrings for good measure.

Go grunge
Checked shirts are having a moment. Propelled to cult status in the ’90s by the likes of Winona Ryder, Courtney Love and Kurt Cobain, the grunge staple has since earned a permanent place in the fashion canon. Today, it’s a street-style favorite, still worn oversized or knotted casually around the waist. However, rather than styling it with ripped jeans and sneakers, tastemakers are opting for sleek separates that are decidedly more polished – think tailoring, balloon pants or a sculptural midi skirt – and a smarter shoe. Toteme’s relaxed cotton shirt, for instance, looks effortlessly chic paired with Tom Ford’s wide-leg pants and Le Monde Béryl’s ‘Luna’ ballet flats from our NET SUSTAIN edit.

Punkish plaid
If you’re drawn to refined silhouettes but want to add a touch more edge to your look, look no further than Wales Bonner’s ‘Cosmic’ skirt. Channeling a punk spirit with rows of silver studs, tartan checks and frayed edges, it speaks to pre-fall’s ‘ladylike’ trend in the coolest way. Dress it up for a work meeting or formal lunch with Khaite’s ‘Jaylin’ shirt – a NET-A-PORTER exclusive – and Gucci’s slingback heels, adding a pop of red via Bottega Veneta’s ‘Lauren 1980’ clutch and a matching lip. If your plans are a little more low-key, try heeled thong sandals and a long-sleeved white tee instead.
