5 Ways To Make Your Skin Glow This Summer

From the A-list secret to a long-lasting glow to the instant skin brightener, these are the fail-safe ways to looking fresh-faced all summer long, says NEWBY HANDS

The A-list glow

When London-based facialist Adeela Crown first developed her Time Release Glow Treatment, she wanted to ensure that her celebrity clients could look good for longer. “The results can last for days,” she explains, “so it will take you from the red carpet to dinners and events – day after day.” It’s also the treatment she does fortnightly on her own skin – and, if used throughout the summer, it’s the perfect antidote to the drying effects of travel, sun, sea and swimming pools. “I prep the skin with a light peel pad and then use a chemical peel to dissolve dead skin cells – along with bacteria, makeup and oil – to allow for the absorption of the mask. Then I mix a cream-based mask with a cocktail of serums – a hydrating hyaluronic acid serum is a basic for everyone; then if skin is very dry, I go for something with ceramides; vitamin C to brighten; and for a lift, look for peptides or add in a retinol. Then use this blend to massage your face for five to ten minutes. You don’t need to be a massage pro – you can use a gua sha or massage tool, like the RéVive RéVolve Contouring Massage Roller. Leave it all on the skin overnight and repeat every two weeks.”

The perfect peel

Summer skin is drier and more dehydrated, so regularly removing the layer of dead, dull cells is important, plus it helps lift off skin-aging pollution particles and any build-up of sticky sun filters. The key is to lightly peel, not over-peel, and to choose a product that can be used regularly – keeping the stronger versions for a post-summer skin reset. Dr. Barbara Sturm’s excellent Enzyme Cleanser can be used weekly on sensitive skin, or daily on oilier types, to keep skin clean and bright. Alternatively, Zelens PHA+ Resurfacing Facial Pads are potent but gentle enough to use in the morning and the evening. Dr. Dennis Gross Skincare’s famous two-step Alpha Beta peel pads range from Ultra Gentle to Extra Strength, but I recommend keeping to the Gentle or mid-strength Universal for daily use during the summer months.

The serum secret

It’s a trick that facialists use to achieve dewy, juicy-looking skin, and it’s simple to slot into your daily regimen at home – it’s also perfect after a day at the beach. Once you’ve applied your serum (or serums), use an icing device, roller or globes (chilled in the refrigerator) to work over the skin. The coldness tightens up the pores so that your skin holds more of the serum, giving a beautifully hydrated, translucent and almost poreless finish.

The active ampoule

Ampoules use a shot of concentrated actives to boost skin, so these short treatment courses are excellent. Developed by Dr. Timm Golueke, Royal Fern’s two-week course of Phytoactive Illuminating Ampoules gives noticeable before-and-after results – I asked a friend to test it and I could see the difference. I also highly rate Sarah Chapman’s 10-day Radiance Recharge System, with vitamin C and her Glow Complex – it’s perfect to slot into your nightly routine. And 111Skin’s The Radiance Concentrate is an excellent seven-day ampoule course that combines a very gentle peel with skin-brighteners for a fast-acting glow.

The instant glow

The ultimate glow in a bottle is still Charlotte Tilbury’s unbeatable Hollywood Flawless Filter. While most makeup brands may have some type of shimmer or sheen, this one comes in a good range of shades to give an effortless sheeny glow to all skin tones. Wear it under makeup, over makeup or on its own for a shot of fresh-faced, dewy skin. It also looks beautiful blended over bare limbs and the collarbones – or just mix it into your daily body lotion for an all-over glow.
