The tuxedo jacket has been a mainstay in women’s wardrobes ever since Parisian couturier Yves Saint Laurent created Le Smoking in 1966 – an iconic piece that has come to represent that particular brand of effortless elegance the French are renowned for.

It’s perhaps natural, then, that Isabel Marant, another Left Bank purveyor of Parisian polish, would offer a 2020 version that will no doubt be cherished for years to come. Crafted from a weightier wool, a satin-trimmed blazer is cut to a contemporary, boxy fit, with double-breasted fastenings that add masculine appeal. For an easy evening outfit, shrug it on over a ioannes turtleneck covered in scintillating sequins and accessorize with silver-toned jewelry and accessories. We suggest Jimmy Choo’s gem-encrusted pumps and a chain-strap bag from Saint Laurent, naturally. Understated denim from The Row, meanwhile, will nail the smart-casual codes.

You can switch up the modern-tux look for daytime by pairing it with ecru jeans; and the wool composition of the blazer gives this tuxedo an everyday appeal. Tom Ford’s racer-back vest in a khaki cashmere and Proenza Schouler’s lace-up leather boots offer military appeal. Gold-toned jewelry works best with earthy shades – finish it off with Loewe’s ‘Puzzle’ bag in tan, which has a handy cross-body strap for all manner of missions when you’re out and about.
