DARK FLORALS
“I’ve never been a big floral dress wearer (vacation dressing aside), but this season’s dark and dramatic flower prints have totally converted me. There’s a plethora to choose from, but it’s the swirling, full- and midi-length, ‘windswept romantic heroine’ dresses that I’ve fallen for. For day, I’ll choose a painterly print (take your pick from any of Giambattista Valli’s show-stopping numbers) or a micro-floral design (Altuzarra’s rosebud dresses are divine), and team with mid-calf boots and a chunky knit or an oversized aviator jacket. For evening, I’ll opt for a sheer floral fabric and team with a black or burgundy velvet tuxedo jacket and over-the-knee boots.” Lucy Yeomans, Editor-in-Chief
A LEATHER COAT
“A statement coat is a must come fall, but this season’s offering is even cooler in sleek, supple leather. Designers shook up the classic color palette, too, turning to oxblood (courtesy of Chloé), forest green (at Givenchy) and, my personal favorite, jade (thank you, Loewe). Of course, you can never go wrong with a classic dark khaki, which is why I’ll be investing in Joseph’s version this season.” Gillian Brett, Associate Fashion Features Editor
AN ’80S PARTY DRESS
“Usually ’80s maximalism isn’t my thing, but it’s hard to resist it for FW18. Lamé and sequin-encrusted mini dresses by the likes of Saint Laurent and Isabel Marant have me very excited for party season – paired with some classic Adidas Gazelle sneakers, they’d also make a glamorous daytime option. For evening, I’ll be taking my styling cues from the runway and finishing with sheer tights, stilettos and slicked-back hair – these statement dresses don’t require any embellishment.” Megan Logue, Fashion Features Writer
A TRENCH COAT
“No, it’s not new, but the trench coat is a classic for a reason: chic, elegant, cool, and back with a twist. I love Givenchy’s take on it, with leather trimmings on the lapels to give a more structured shape, and the timeless version worn by Lauren Hutton in Bottega Veneta’s 50th anniversary runway show. But the winner for me is Acne Studios’ masterpiece; I love its shade of beige, the loose oversized cut, the length… Wear it with high-waisted tailored pants and a classic white tee and you’ll look effortlessly cool.” Helen Broadfoot, Sittings Editor
ANIMAL PRINT
“Leopard print is back – but did it ever really go away? The ready-to-wear equivalent of a red lip, this exotic print has remained a staple in every stylish woman’s wardrobe, with the ability to instantly elevate any outfit. This season is no different: standout coats by Calvin Klein 205W39NYC and Victoria Beckham are top of my wish list, pared back with simple black knits and cowboy boots. If you’re wary of head-to-toe print, look out for leopard shoes by Gianvito Rossi or ponyskin boots by Tabitha Simmons.” Hannah Cole, Digital Style Editor
AN ELEVATED MIDI SKIRT
“I’m all in favor of anything that makes getting dressed as easy as possible, and a midi skirt ticks that box. Plus, thanks to everyone from Rejina Pyo to Joseph working their magic, it’s exciting and interesting enough to feel like a new-season reinvention. It’s also just the thing to give my generally low-key style a bit of polish – I’ll be wearing mine with an oversized knit and a pair of cowboy boots or chunky sneakers.” Emma Sells, Fashion Features Editor
HERITAGE CHECKS
“Heritage tweeds and checks (usually synonymous with Savile Row and HRH The Queen) are giving some stiff competition to animal print right now. I’ll be wholeheartedly embracing them this season, adding a supersized tweed coat to my closet to layer over a pretty silk dress and hunting for a mannish, double-breasted checked suit to wear with sneakers.” Charlie Miller, Executive Fashion & Jewelry Director
THE COWBOY BOOT
“I like to follow trends with accessories as opposed to ready-to-wear – it allows me to nod to what’s new while staying true to myself. I have a pretty basic uniform consisting of blazers and high-waisted jeans and basically every shoe goes with it, from Cinderella pumps and ‘ugly’ sneakers to nude sandals. So, for fall, the piece I feel most excited about is the cowboy boot. No prizes for guessing what I’ll be wearing it with…” Anina Heé, Associate Shopping Editor
A LEATHER SKIRT
“I have quite the collection of leather pants – I tend to live in them in the winter months – however, I blame Anthony Vaccarello at Saint Laurent and Givenchy’s Clare Waight Keller for my new obsession with leather skirts. Short, tight, high-waisted ideally, and (of course) black, they have become my new winter essential. They’re perfect with bare legs, flats and a gray marl T-shirt or knit in the warmer fall months, but teamed with opaque tights and an oversized coat in winter, I can take a heeled boot as high as I like.” Kay Barron, Fashion Director
REINVENTED SHIRTING
“I don’t really shop in trends; I prefer to look for classics that have been reworked. This season, I’m stocking up on shirts and shirt dresses – I love the idea of something in a classic fabric that feels like a man’s shirt but has been given an interesting twist. Top of my list is Loewe’s shirt dress, which I’ll wear with ballet flats or sneakers, and Sacai’s dark striped shirt, which I’ll team with black pants and flats.” Morgan Pilcher, Fashion Editor
TARTAN & PLAID
“Maybe it was the tiny, knife-pleat kilt that I wore to school, or maybe it was Vivienne Westwood and punk rock and the Black Watch tartan military-dress pants that formed the basis of my best teenage looks, but few fabrics deliver the same frisson – the thrill of season change, threaded through with the hint of rock’n’roll rebellion – as the Scottish check. This fall, the plaid memo is loud and proud. I’m craving Miu Miu’s magnificent oversized wool coat and I will be boldly clashing my tartan pieces with leopard, florals and even stripes. Don’t be shy to mix more than one tartan in your look – Tibi has a fabulous pair of pants featuring two mismatched tonal plaids. What can I say? Check. Check. Check.” Sarah Bailey, Executive Brand Editor
