Beauty

IN THE MORNING

I do my own facial massage…

…with a face roller or a traditional Chinese Gua Sha tool to calm puffy or irritated skin. I use the SK-II Facial Treatment Essence every day and rotate between a Vitamin C or hyaluronic acid serum before applying SPF. If I’ve been traveling or have super-dry skin, Sisley Confort Extrême Day Skincare cream is a savior for my eczema. Once a year, I go to the Shangpree Spa in Seoul, which is the only place in the world I’ll go to for a facial.

My number one beauty rule…

…is to eat healthily. And I don’t mean dieting or going vegan – it’s just about having regular, balanced meals. I try to eat on a schedule and take probiotics – those changes have made my skin and body feel better inside and out.

Growing up, I never thought I was pretty…

…I’m three-quarters Korean and a quarter Japanese, but there weren’t any Asian girls on magazine covers, so I always thought I should have a different skin tone and facial features. I once considered rhinoplasty, but my father looked at me and said, “You have accomplished so much with that face – stop caring about what other people look like and society’s standards of beauty, and love who you are.” I think that can apply to anyone of any race or gender. I love that things are changing, and with my platform, I can be a part of that for other women. Now, I feel so comfortable in my own skin and understand that beauty is subjective, it comes in many different forms.

My secret to a perfect selfie…

…isn’t an app or filter, but highlighter. I don’t have naturally high cheekbones but highlighter sculpts my face in a beautiful way. I layer textures for the best highlight – I start with a cream, then apply my foundation over the top, and then I finish with a powder highlighter for an extra glow.

IN THE EVENING

My hair is naturally thick and straight…

…so I’ll use the Ouai Texturizing Hair Spray to add movement if I’m going out. My stylist Anh Co Tran – he also does Alexa Chung, Anne Hathaway and Liv Tyler and is based between LA, NYC and Miami – cuts my hair in such a way that it’s so easy to maintain. I won’t let anyone else cut it.

I do breathing exercises…

…when I feel stressed or anxious. I inhale for four seconds through the nose, hold and exhale for seven through the mouth. I also think having a consistent routine and good sleep is important for a healthy mind – I try to get at least seven hours every night.

I always travel with bath salts…

…My body often feels rundown due to traveling and jet lag. If I can’t book in for a massage when I land, then I’ll take a hot bath with Epsom salts to relax and detox. If I’m at home in LA, I’ll do a hot yoga or hot Pilates class in the early evening to wind down.

I take time to reflect…

…I think about the best thing that happened, the worst thing that happened and everything I’ve achieved in-between. It’s a way for me to mentally note what I’m grateful for and include this in my prayers.
