In The Know: 5 Destination Art Fairs Outside The Major Circuit

NOMAD Abu Dhabi

Beyond the well-publicized fairs that dominate the art world, there are other, more intimate boutique events to discover, offering access to interesting local scenes and smaller but brilliantly curated galleries. Here, EANNA MORRISON BARRS shares five lesser-known art destinations that collectors are flocking to now

Lifestyle

The art world has a well-traveled circuit. Collectors move from New York to Basel, London, Cologne, Miami, Paris and back again, with many stopping off at offshoots of the Freize and Art Basel fairs in the Middle East and Asia. Outside these major art capitals, however, there is a new guard of destinations with beautiful local scenes and events showcasing art in fresh contexts – and stylish vacation spots – that are claiming their place in the cultural calendar.

Among the new hubs gaining traction is Aspen, where NET-A-PORTER and Sotheby’s just hosted a special event for art-world insiders. “Over the years there has been a huge surge in the number of art fairs – there’s one every week in a different city,” says event co-host and Sotheby’s Aspen Gallery Director, Christine Heller. “Collectors are becoming a little bit more selective, curating their own schedule and navigating art fairs in a way that speaks to their individual needs and desires. There’s more of a sense of intimacy and real connection to the art and nature that you experience in Aspen,” she continues.

Across the globe, discerning crowds are steadily drawing closer to art fairs with a distinct sense of place, as well as those with greater opportunities to build connections with local artists. From Gstaad’s mountain peaks to the Balearic Islands, here are five destination art fairs making a strong case for reconsidering your travel plans.

Aspen Art Fair, Colorado

Aspen Art Fair, Colorado, United States

Nestled in the Roaring Fork Valley of Colorado’s Rocky Mountains, Aspen is primarily a winter retreat that attracts sports enthusiasts, but during the summer months, the city’s rich art and culture scene really comes to life. Aspen Art Fair, held at the historic Hotel Jerome, has become an annual highlight – inviting collectors to experience art in an intimate setting that embraces its mountainous backdrop. An impressive roster of local and international galleries is on show here, but it’s the fair’s site-specific programming that really stands out. Visitors start the day with early-morning river plunges, followed by guided hikes and tours of a private outdoor sculpture park – it’s where collectors and gallerists can build relationships beyond the fair’s stands.

Aspen Art Fair takes place from July 29 to August 1, 2026

CHART Art Fair, Copenhagen

CHART Art Fair, Copenhagen, Denmark

Copenhagen’s food, fashion and design scenes are world-renowned. The city is considered a preeminent culinary destination, and Copenhagen Fashion Week and 3 Days of Design are now firm fixtures on the calendar, but as an art capital, it’s still relatively under-discovered. CHART aims to boost the Nordic contemporary art profile by bringing the region’s leading artists and galleries to the fore during Copenhagen’s larger, more internationally focused Enter Art Fair. For those hoping to take advantage of the long summer days and nature-adjacent urban areas, the fair’s cultural programming includes open-air experiences at the iconic Tivoli Gardens and running, cycling and metro routes that encourage visitors to explore public art installations throughout the city. Don’t miss a visit to Louise Roe Gallery and Noma’s highly anticipated reopening while you’re there.

CHART Art Fair will take place from August 27-30, 2026

NOMAD Abu Dhabi

NOMAD Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates

Unlike many of the flagship fairs, NOMAD doesn’t have a defined destination – it’s a traveling showcase of contemporary art and design that pops up in international hotspots such as Monaco, Capri, St. Moritz and the Hamptons. For its next instalment, NOMAD returns to Abu Dhabi for a second consecutive year, reflecting the city’s growing art market and cultural landscape. Expect leading international galleries and site-specific projects staged in the decommissioned Terminal 1 at Zayed International Airport – a modernist architectural marvel appealing to jet-set arrivals that don’t want to stray too far from the tarmac. The fair coincides with the inaugural Frieze Abu Dhabi but offers a boutique alternative with exhibitors and programming curated in dialogue with regional traditions and Islamic aesthetics.

NOMAD Abu Dhabi will take place from November 18 to 22, 2026

MAZE Art Gstaad

MAZE Art Gstaad, Switzerland

Art Basel has dominated Switzerland’s art scene since 1970, but in the Alpine village of Gstaad – best-known as an ultra-luxury ski resort – a compelling rival is emerging. During peak skiing season, MAZE Art Gstaad hosts a salon d’art that attracts an après-ski crowd with a cultural appetite. For its fourth edition, MAZE has carefully selected around 50 world-leading exhibitors – not least London’s White Cube and Pace Gallery – that will present works by modern and contemporary artists. Previous salons have brought together 20th-century masters such as Roy Lichtenstein, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Andy Warhol, Keith Haring and Louise Bourgeois, alongside exquisite high-jewelry pieces by Nikos Koulis, rare books and photography. Hit the slopes early and then head to the Festival-Zelt event space for this unmissable assemblage of art and design.

Art Cologne Palma Mallorca, Spain

The buzzy Balearic Islands have long lured cultured sunseekers, but Mallorca is swiftly becoming a meeting point for artists, galleries and collectors in the Mediterranean, too. Following a successful premiere, Art Cologne’s Palma Mallorca satellite fair will return for a second year in April 2027, positioning itself as an unmissable destination on the luxury traveler’s collecting circuit. Conceived in close collaboration with the island’s burgeoning art scene, the fair celebrates Mallorca’s distinctive creative character and shines a spotlight on emerging Balearic and Spanish artists. The strong regional focus draws international collectors on vacation mode, including island-hoppers from neighboring Ibiza and Menorca, who want to take a piece of the island home with them. Come for the golden shores and secret coves but stay to discover up-and-coming artists you won’t find anywhere else.
