The Weekly Haircare Ritual Everyone Should Try For A Great Hair Day
BABBA RIVERA, Forbes 30 Under 30 alumna and the founder of haircare label Ceremonia, shares the weekly hair routine that really works, her go-to skincare hack on a ‘bad’ face day, and more from her daily beauty routine
In the morning
As soon as I wake up…
…I breastfeed my baby. My husband makes breakfast while she feeds and I snooze.
I have my skincare on rotation…
…but I still have my regular favorites, like Tata Harper’s Regenerating Cleanser, which I love. I’m a big serums girl and I really like the collaboration that Marie Veronique did with dermatologist Kristina Holey – the [products] don’t smell very nice, but they’ve transformed my skin. I finish with Vintner’s Daughter Active Botanical Serum, which is kind of oily, so it makes a good final coat.
My goal is to make every day a good hair day
I don’t know how to style my hair, but if it’s nourished and shiny then I feel there’s no need for styling! I love applying lots of Ceremonia’s Pequi Curl Activator – it’s a very light serum that gives a frizz-free, shiny finish. Even if you don’t have curls, it hydrates and enhances your natural hair pattern.
My ‘bad’ face day hack…
…is my ‘express facial’: I layer on Tata Harper’s Regenerating Cleanser with her Resurfacing Mask – it’s so powerful and gives an instant glow; I always do this if I have a photo shoot [coming up].
I always travel with…
I’m obsessed with tennis
I’m a complete beginner, but I’m getting into the groove of it. And I love Barry’s Bootcamp – it gives me an endorphin rush like nothing else; afterwards, I feel like Iron Woman! It’s like I have a superpower and I get so much more work done.
I try to eat a 90 percent plant-based diet…
…plus 10 percent cheese or ice cream. I don’t drink coffee or alcohol and try to live a healthy life, but without too many rules. If I want dessert, I have it.
My husband gives great advice
I grew up with immigrant parents in the projects and my husband empowered me to see life through a different lens. He always says, “What’s the worst thing that can happen?” We can be so scared of doing the one thing we’ve been dreaming of doing, but he’s shifted my mindset from minimizing risk to optimizing opportunity.
In the evening
My weekly hair ritual…
…begins with the Ceremonia Aceite de Moska oil and I use my Scalp Masajeador (massager) to work it in. It’s such a powerful ritual, as the massager helps the oil fully cleanse the scalp – if you have greasy roots, this actually helps to reduce that, too. I leave it to work overnight, then shampoo the next morning, adding a couple of drops of oil to my conditioner for an extra hydration boost. Oil is so great for the hair: you can use a few drops on dry ends or add it to your conditioner, so it becomes a mask – people use our oil on their eyebrows, as it’s also great for growth.
I always double cleanse…
…then use Verso Micellar Water to prep the skin to better absorb what’s coming next. It’s something I learnt later in life, but face mists help you get better results from your products. If I have time, I use my NuFace device, too – I love it. For day, I prefer serums and an oil, but at night I always add in The Chill Cream from Mantle or the Active Restorative Moisturizing Cream from Circumference – it’s so light, it’s like a soufflé.
My mom could turn any bathroom into a spa
We could never afford to pay for a treatment, so she would make masks and do all our beauty rituals at home, while my dad would cut our hair. Now, my friends and my mom come over and we mask together and hang out.
I’m a minimal makeup person
My best beauty tip…
…is from my mom. She always says it doesn’t matter what you wear as long as your face and body are clean and moisturized; nothing looks better than healthy, nourished skin!
When I’m wired but tired…
…I take CBD tinctures, but not while nursing.
