5 must-see moments from the 2019 Golden Globes

They came, they saw, they killed it – the 76th Golden Globe Awards was an occasion full of hope and joy, with less grandstanding but no less determination than we have seen in recent years. If you didn’t tune in, this is what you missed. By ANNABEL BROG

HOST WITH THE MOST
Host Sandra Oh bowed to her parents and thanked them in Korean when she won Best Actress in a TV drama for Killing Eve

Sandra Oh makes history

The Korean-Canadian Grey’s Anatomy alumnus is the Golden Globes’ first-ever host of Asian descent. And when she was named Best Actress in a TV drama for Killing Eve, she became the first-ever Asian woman to win more than once (post her Supporting Actress award for Grey’s in 2006). Oh also won 2019 (not a bad feat considering it’s still January) with her adorable acceptance speech, in which she thanked her beaming Mom and Dad in Korean.

DOUBLE TAKE
Best Original Song winner Lady Gaga paid homage to Judy Garland’s dress in the 1954 version of A Star is Born

Lady Gaga’s fashion tribute

Gaga lost out on the Best Actress award to Olivia Colman for The Favourite, but she certainly won on the red carpet. In a tribute that only the Mother Monster could carry off, she wore a violet Valentino Haute Couture tribute to A Star is Born’s first leading lady, Judy Garland – mirroring the off-the-shoulder periwinkle-blue gown she wore in the original 1954 movie. Gaga dispensed with Garland’s elbow-length velvet gloves, choosing instead to match her hair to her dress.

COMEDY DUO
Will Amy Poehler and Maya Rudolph be called on to host this year’s Oscars?

Maya Rudolph and Amy Poehler steal the show

The comedy duo took to the stage to present twice at the Golden Globes – at one point, Poehler proposed to Rudolph, which is one wedding we would sell our soul to attend – and proved so popular that the internet is calling for them to host the Academy Awards in the wake of Kevin Hart’s withdrawal. Poehler has a long awards-ceremony history after three year’s co-hosting the Golden Globes with Tina Fey, so watch this space…

STANDING STRONG
Regina King shone a light on Time’s Up x2 and made a gender parity pledge in her Best Supporting Actress speech

Regina King’s promise

King scooped the Best Supporting Actress award for her performance in Barry Jenkins’ If Beale Street Could Talk and won equal acclaim for her rousing acceptance speech. “I am going to use my platform to say right now that in the next two years, everything that I produce – and I am making a vow and it’s going to be tough to make sure – that everything that I produce, that it’s 50% women,” she declared. “I just challenge anyone out there who is in a position of power, not just in our industry, in all industries, I challenge you to challenge yourselves and stand with us in solidarity and do the same.” Mic drop.

STEPPING OUT
Irina Shayk and Bradley Cooper made a rare red-carpet appearance

Bradley and Irina lead the charge of the couples brigade

Given that their daughter is nearly two years old, and neither of them is exactly low profile, it’s an achievement in itself that actor/ director Bradley Cooper and model Irina Shayk rarely appear on the red carpet together. Never has the phrase ‘pick your moment’ been so curated; the moment clearly being when one of you is nominated in the Best Actor and Best Director category for A Star is Born. Cooper scrubbed up nicely in a white tuxedo, while Shayk went full bombshell in a sequined, second-skin Versace gown with thigh-high split.
