The Makeup Looks To Wear With… Cool Summer Whites
A perennial summer style staple, white is the perfect canvas for pretty much anything. But how best to elevate it with your beauty look? DANIELLE FOX discovers the less obvious beauty rules to apply with fashion’s standout summer shade
A twist on the classic red lip
White shirt + red lip is a a match made in heaven. And if you like the idea of a shiny, glossy red lip (but not the constant management that usually comes with it), opt for a new-gen lip oil. It has all the glamour of a sheer red lip, without any stickiness, giving you a veil of the classic color – plus, a beautiful high-shine finish. You can use it three ways. First, as a subtle stain, by using your fingers to press on the featherlight tinted oil. Or, for more obvious color, swipe on twice for a soft (but by no means subtle) lip. And for the most striking statement, layer it as a topcoat over your favorite red lipstick to add extra drama.
A long lash will never go out of fashion
There is something striking about an eye with a perfectly curled, long and lush carbon-black lash – but it can be a challenge if you don’t have the right tools and products. Just like your hair, lashes can also be prone to snapping and breaking, so the key is to hydrate and condition. Just as you would introduce a deep-conditioning treatment for your hair, you can do the same for your lashes. While it doesn’t promise growth, we’ve seen a noticeable difference to the strength and shine of eyelashes when you consistently use a lash oil overnight. And if you follow with a primer (the scaffolding for your lash), it will provide a perfectly tacky surface for mascara to adhere to, instantly giving you thicker lashes. We promise you it’s worth this extra step. Finally, you only need to take a look at a mascara wand to know the exact lash effect it will deliver – so go for a compact, tightly bristled brush to achieve exceptional separation and definition.
The metallic that works for all skin tones
Molten metal shades are always a good idea, but the new iterations are a bit softer this season, with rose gold being the standout shade of the summer. If you’re nervous, take comfort in the fact that this is a universally flattering hue that has just the right blend of warmth. Rose gold makes you look warm and radiant, whatever your skin tone. Plus, because it’s not as dramatic as deeper metallics, it’s a look you can sweep all over the eyes. Use a small shadow buffing brush to press on your chosen pigment first, then blend out for soft edges.
