Discover The Colombian Brand Reimagining Your Vacation Wardrobe
With its edit of flattering silhouettes and signature ruffles, MAYGEL CORONEL has mastered the art of confidence-boosting swimwear
“The idea was born from a heartfelt conversation with my mom,” says Maygel Coronel of the eponymous label she founded in 2017 in her native Cartagena, Colombia. “She asked me to create swimwear that flatters and elevates the confidence of all bodies.” The resulting collection treads the line between swimwear and ready-to-wear. “Picture a woman seamlessly transitioning from a leisurely day by the pool to a nice dinner with friends,” she says.
Indeed, Coronel embodies the women she designs for. Born in Cartagena, she grew up immersed in fashion via her designer mother, who “exposed me to the fascinating world of sewing and creativity from a very young age; watching her work sparked a passion in me”. Coronel went on to study fashion design in Italy, which introduced her to pattern-making – a skill that would later become integral to her label.
“The pattern-cutting process begins with conceptualizing designs, drawing inspiration from our brand’s past work,” says Coronel. Uncompromising on quality, impeccable cutting is vital – “the entire process stands as a testament to our dedication to delivering innovative and high-quality creations” – and never losing sight of the central aim: to make women feel amazing.
With a clear vision and design nous, Coronel has quickly built a recognizable design DNA, combining figure-skimming silhouettes with signature details, including cutaways “to provide glimpses of skin in a strategic and tasteful manner”, ruffles “to add a sense of fluidity and motion”, and florals “to serve as a powerful expression of femininity”.
“I draw inspiration from my cultural heritage and my deep connection to Latin America… A significant influence is the diverse and beautiful silhouettes of Colombian women

The brand is underpinned by a dedicated commitment to sustainability and ethical practices, with materials locally sourced in Colombia and locally made by skilled native artisans – earning several of the styles NET SUSTAIN status. Designs are crafted predominantly in Lycra, so “the piece fits the body and not the other way around”, and allows the brand to adopt a three-size approach to minimize waste. ‘Petite’ runs from XXS to S, ‘One Size’ from S to L, and ‘Extended’ from L to XXL. “These are versatile and comfortable options for a broad spectrum of body shapes,” says Coronel.
The latest collection, SS24, remains true to the brand’s well-established DNA, offering super-flattering swimwear (several bestselling silhouettes return season after season) and dresses that will segue neatly from beach to bar. Mix-and-match separates are new to the label for summer, as is the addition of “vibrant spring green”, which adds a hit of color to the brand’s signature pared-back neutrals. “My vision is to create versatile and functional wardrobe staples,” confirms Coronel.
Indeed, the designer has big plans for the brand, adding: “We envision a diverse world of designs, exploring innovative fabrics and new categories to push the boundaries of creativity.” But her Colombian roots will always remain central to the brand’s philosophy: “I draw inspiration from my cultural heritage and my deep connection to Latin America, especially to my eternal muse, Colombia,” she says. “The rich blend of cultures shapes my aesthetic sensibilities and my perception of women – a significant influence is the diverse and beautiful silhouettes of Colombian women.”
Coronel also adds a touch of Italian elegance – inspired by her husband’s side of the family – to create “a dance between two rich cultural influences that adds a unique and dynamic touch to my creative process,” she says. There’s a strong sense that wherever this brand goes, Coronel’s designs will always be “a celebration of this harmonious blend”.
