No longer solely the playful eveningwear destination, Self-Portrait has designs on every category in your wardrobe

Fashion

Self-Portrait has been something of a secret weapon on the fashion scene since Malaysian-born, Central Saint Martins alumnus Han Chong released his first edit of occasionwear in 2013. Since then, Chong has been populating the wardrobes of royal family members and red-carpet regulars alike, and has diversified his signature embellished evening edits to include handbags (the ‘Bow Bag’ was an instant It-girl favorite), swimwear, outerwear and knitwear. His fresh, feminine outlook has expanded into a lifestyle empire with scores of stores and a network of collaborators, including Roland Mouret – Chong acquired the Roland Mouret label under the umbrella of his SP Collection company in 2021 – and Christopher Kane, who was chosen as the first guest designer in the Self-Portrait Residency program.

The Resort 2025 season sees Self-Portrait cement itself as a destination for every aspect of a woman’s wardrobe – not just those statement pieces for special occasions. When creating the collection, which puts the onus on versatile daywear as much as it does wow-factor dresses, Chong considered four muses within the Self-Portrait sphere. Enter: the event aficionado, who knows every dress code inside out. This season, the loyal Self-Portrait customer will be doing cocktail hour in flattering monochrome ribbed knits and easy metallic chenille tailoring that create a through-line from her new Self-Portrait uniform to that fail-safe nighttime attire.

What sets Chong’s elevated essentials apart is the attention to detail he applies to both his heavily adorned dresses and his chintzy knitwear

Joining her around the after-hours fashion scene is another of Chong’s clients, who has her mind firmly set on date-night looks. To ensure she nails the balance between relaxed and refined, this decisive dresser will be employing Self-Portrait’s playful denim pieces, including a dress featuring a striking crystalized collar, pockets and button-down detailing. Nothing spells out confidence quite like a well-constructed mini that commands attention.

Chong’s clients’ schedules are always top of his mind, and the thoughtful designer’s third Self-Portrait persona focuses on the powerhouse who has it all – and needs the closet to prove it. She’s rushing from her desk to dinner, but never fails to look anything but put-together, thanks to her assemblage of Self-Portrait separates. For Resort 2025, she’ll live in her sequined bouclé mini dresses with sweet pearl trims and bow details inspired by ’60s looks that still feel effortlessly elegant today. Timeless-with-a-twist trench coats, oversized bombers and shearling-collared leather jackets (a new Self-Portrait sideline) mean a chic shoulder-robing moment is never far away.

Lastly, the city girl, who has the final say on what’s in, will not be parted from the strong-shoulder cardigans and smart, dark-wash jeans she can swap in and out of the more ornate Self-Portrait archive she’s been building up (the snow-white beaded items will be catnip for her this season). What sets Chong’s elevated essentials apart is the attention to detail he applies to both his heavily adorned dresses and his chintzy knitwear. There is never a missed opportunity for diamanté in Chong’s world. Resort 2025, more than ever, shows that Self-Portrait is a master of decoration and detail.
