4 ways to wear a camel coat

There are few items more classic, flattering and versatile than the camel coat. This season, it’s played a starring role across the collections of designers from Burberry to Chloé. Amid the statement-making leather trenches and faux-fur coats, it’s the stealth-mode victor of ‘FW19’s chicest coat’ – here are four ways to style it now…

Cape camel coat, Max Mara; knee-length camel coat with black detail, Burberry; full-length dark-camel coat, Stella McCartney

Camel and black is a winning combination. For enviable office style, choose a sharply tailored version (La Collection’s longline number is wish-list worthy) and pair it with a black turtleneck, neutral tailored pants and a fresh pair of loafers. Accessorize with a satchel or structured bag in mock croc, such as By Far’s, for a subtle hint of texture.

If you have bohemian taste, a camel coat can lend a dose of sophistication to your usual style. Look out for suede textures with a ’70s feel (such as Joseph’s luxurious fur-lined one) that will complement floral dresses, billowing blouses and flared pants.

A camel coat and indigo denim are sartorial soulmates. Give off-duty double denim a refined finish by layering a camel coat over the top with a white turtleneck underneath to keep the palette fresh. White or cream shoes will tie the look together in tonal harmony – or make more of a statement with snake-print boots.

If your weekend style agenda is to look smart but feel comfortable, a camel coat will elevate a simple T-shirt and jeans combination. A boldly colored scarf, mini bag or boots will inject a little impact into your downtime style.
