Laufey’s Everyday Skincare, Makeup and Wellness Secrets
The Icelandic singer-songwriter shares the essentials behind her skincare routine, signature blurred lip and freckled makeup look – plus, how Rachmaninoff and nightly baths keep her grounded on tour
The first thing I do in the morning…
…is brush my teeth. Then, I make myself an oat-milk latte with my new Breville machine that was a birthday gift. I have to hit this three-step routine – brushing my teeth, stepping outside for fresh air and making myself a coffee – or I can’t get on with my day properly. I tour and travel a lot for work, so it’s important that I’m able to replicate this routine from anywhere in the world. When I finally have the chance to look at my skin, I check to see whether there are any new spots or not. It’s been taking a beating in recent months because of stress, travel and the amount of makeup I wear.

I have quite a simple skincare regimen
In the morning I use a Cerave face wash and light moisturizer, but I’ll apply a thicker moisturizer when I’m traveling. I also occasionally use under-eye patches and a cold roller to get my eyes set for the day. I love the Imprinting Eye Mask eye patches from Bioeffect – an Icelandic brand. Because my skin undergoes daily stress, I concentrate on making sure that it’s well hydrated. In the evening, I use Bioderma’s micellar water and cotton pads to remove my makeup, followed by my Cerave face wash and moisturizer. If I have stage makeup on, I’ll use an oil-based cleanser first to make sure every last bit is off. When it comes to breakouts, I pray and use acne and spot patches – I like the ones from Hero Cosmetics. And if my skin is dehydrated, I moisturize even more and make sure to drink plenty of water.
Bad face days are the worst…
…especially when I have to show up on camera or onstage, which these days is almost every day. I wish I had a better trick, but I try my best to avoid unnecessary makeup – and mirrors!
I do the same makeup every day
My favorite foundation is Westman Atelier’s Vital Skin Foundation Stick. To restore color in my face [after applying foundation], I love Chanel’s Les Beiges Healthy Golden Glow Powder and Lip and Cheek Balm in shade 3 – Vital Beige. For my brows, I like Ilia’s In Frame Brow Gel; and on my eyes, I use Shu Uemura’s 3D Contour Beige Eyeshadow Palette, Ilia’s Limitless Lash Mascara and a Shiseido eyelash curler – this is the one product I can’t live without. Then, on my lips, I wear Make Up For Ever’s Artist Color lip liner in Endless Cacao [a taupey brown shade]. For fun, I like to end my makeup with the Peripera Freckle Pen. It’s something I learned from makeup artist Nina Park. I love how she uses it to bring out my natural freckles; it makes me feel like I’m not wearing makeup.
I don’t go anywhere without my lip liner
A perfectly blurred lip line never fails to make me feel put together. I also love using a little bit of blush to brighten up my face.
When it comes to beauty tools…
…I have the Ginkgo gua sha tool from Sisley that I like to use alongside the Therabody depuffing wand. Sometimes I keep the gua sha in the freezer and it's such a treat after a long day.
I love my Shiseido eyelash curler
It truly opens my eyes up, and the shape perfectly fits my eye, unlike a lot of eyelash curlers on the market.
My go-to scent is St. Pauls Apothecary
I found it in a beautiful home store in Copenhagen called Frama and my mom wears the same one. It smells so whimsy and, as a bonus, it makes me feel connected to my mom when we’re on opposite sides of the world.
I regularly book in with facialist Joomee Song in LA
She’s a skin wizard, and I am astounded by her work on my skin every time.
Three products currently sitting on my bathroom counter
The first is a Neti Pot nasal rinse kit. As a singer, I always have to make sure my sinuses are clean. My Milbon shampoo and conditioner are also some of my favorites and came highly recommended to me by my hair artist, Daniel Kim. I’ve seen such a big difference in my hair since I started using them – less dryness and fewer split ends. I also have the Blue Lagoon Lip Balm on my counter, which lasts forever and makes me feel connected to my home country.
I take a bubble bath every single day
It helps me relax and get ready for sleep. That, plus making a cup of peppermint tea and reading, helps me get to sleep. When I’m in my bath, I like a simple body soap – I’m partial to the ones from Le Labo. I also love using a special wide-tooth hair comb to spread out my conditioner and detangle my hair. I try not to do too much with my hair, but I also love Roz’s Evergreen Style Cream for the occasional slicked back hairstyle.
For a night out, I love to wear a lot of eyeliner
I’ve also been playing around with fun glittery eyeshadows when I can.
When traveling…
…I don’t think about the previous time zone at all and try my best to get enough sleep. If you miss the first two days of fixing your jet lag, it’s not going to happen.

I have started strength training recently…
…and I have never felt stronger in my life! Sometimes, I’ll do Pilates classes on my reformer at home, too. There are a lot of great online classes. The golden combo to feel my best is good sleep and a good workout. A good smoothie also helps; I love a banana and strawberry protein smoothie.

My mom’s best advice
My mom and grandma on my Chinese side have always preached about taking a walk after every big meal to digest. I try to do this when I can.
Classical music always takes me home…
…no matter where I am in the world. It reminds me of my roots and helps me feel the ground under my feet. I love Víkingur Ólafsson’s recordings of Bach and the 2nd Rachmaninov piano concerto.
Laufey’s third studio album, A Matter Of Time: The Final Hour, is out now
