The Fashion Report: Oscars 2018
So, you’ve had a little time to digest last night’s looks. Fashion is objective, which is why we like to separate the approaches into distinct categories. There are some controversial choices here…
CATEGORY: RED-CARPET RISKS
St. Vincent in Saint Laurent: Worn with blue yeti boots on the runway, St. Vincent added a Liza-in-Cabaret feel with barely there black tights and super-high heels.
Sarah Paulson in Marc Jacobs: Yellow was more prevalent than usual this year, but Paulson's long black gloves upped the contrast.
Janelle Monáe in Christian Siriano: This was Monáe’s after-party outfit, a striking red suit with epaulettes and a trailing jacket.
Winner
Nicole Kidman in Armani Privé: It would have been bold even in black, but the blue was electric. Bravo to Kidman and stylist Julia von Boehm.
CATEGORY: CLASSIC BEAUTIES
Jane Fonda in Balmain: Almost every inch of skin was covered, but Fonda looked hot as hell.
Mary J. Blige in Vera Wang: The history-making double nominee (Blige was the first person ever to be recognized in the Best Supporting Actress and Best Song categories) swapped the white Atelier Versace gown she wore on the red carpet for this deep claret-colored Vera Wang dress to perform.
Danai Gurira in Gabriela Hearst: Did you spot the swirling patterns painted onto her shaved head? Almost as stunning as her Black Panther co-star and red-carpet running mate, Lupita Nyong’o.
Winner
Zendaya in Giambattista Valli: Extra points for the perfect beauty and fashion combination. The shimmery brown smoky eye and slick topknot balanced youth with glamour.
CATEGORY: SIZZLE REELS
Jennifer Lawrence in Dior: Her sequined dress allowed her to climb over the seats while holding a wine glass, which is a consideration we should all bear in mind.
Tracee Ellis Ross in Balmain: From the waist down the dress is flattering, with a sufficiently daring side split, but up top? It looks like a jacket but isn’t. What is it? Sensational.
Winner
Gal Gadot in Givenchy Haute Couture: Her dress sparkled and her eyes gleamed. Gadot looked every inch the Wonder Woman.
