Black may be your winter fail-safe, but fashion’s favorite shade can also stand the heat. We’re not the only advocates: Gilda Ambrosio and Caroline de Maigret demonstrate perfectly how black can be a chic and easy option for sultry days and nights.

Fundamentally, this look is all about wearing the right fabrics. Cotton, linen and lightweight tops from the likes of Ellery and Totême are perennial warm-weather winners, but even leather can be a viable option – see Nanushka and Isabel Marant for the best lightweight shapes. Some styling suggestions? Throw on a blazer and add sneakers or barely-there sandals; opt for elegance with a classic strappy mini dress; or go for an of-the-moment combination of long shorts and a T-shirt. The finishing touch should be a flash of glowing skin: try a shoulder-baring black dress or leg-lengthening mini skirt.
